Has any one had a problem with the paint on a metal roof being destroyed by
creosote?

Not personally, but it sounds perfectly reasonable for the oils/tars in creosote to have a severe reaction to any painted surface. Paint doesn't like oil on it.

not personally, but there is a house just north of me where even the brick chimney used for oil, that does not stand very far out of the roof, seems to have caused a huge rusty patch all around it on the galvanized steel roof- and that's the only area of that apparently uniform-aged roof. not surprising given that until a few years ago, fuel oil was just about all high in sulfur content.

my guess would be that if your chimney is tall enough and otherwise located so that the smoke will draw away from the roof under all conditions, it should not be an issue- and that if it's not drawing in that manner, you may want to look at it for reasons beyond the roofing
