just found out while inquiring about pellet prices at a local retailer that michigan sales tax on pellets is 4% as opposed to the standard 6%. Any Michigan pellet pigs out there that can weigh in on this???? I have been paying 6%......

there should be no sales tax on pellets. due to being an energy saving fuel. in ct there is none & in NY as well

None here in PA also. I even made a purchase in Philly to see if they'd try and collect it there (at least their extra 1%), but there was no tax.

They can charge 6, but you need to fill out a reimbursement form or something like that. I decided that the hassle wasn't worth it for the 2 tons I buy.

Yooper,

4% is correct on pellets in MI.

I had an issue with Menards for my first two seasons of burning where they charged 6%. Once I learned I was being overcharged, I brought my old receipts back to them and they refunded the overcharge.

They probably didn't have to do that on my past purchases, but I was happy.

Since then it has always been correct at the register-4%. Lowes and Home Depot plus my local stove shop have always rang up with a 4% tax.

Happy Pellet hunting! Great prices in West MI right now.

Cost of living in Tennessee is low,but but not on sales tax.We don't have a state income tax ,but sales tax on pellets is 9.25%.OUCH
