Feeling the Heat

We have about 80ft or so of city owned 6ft tall chainlink fence that runs the length of the rear of our backyard and we've been thinking about a privacy fence. The location along the fence on our property also makes a perfect location to season wood as its very sunny and breezy so I decided to kill two birds with one stone:

Half privacy fence, half wood pile...privacy pile. My dogs loves laying in this spot for some reason:

Here's the otherside of the fence (80ft section split by a 10ft diameter bush) that we just started:

We get almost all of our wood dumped by local tree services in the driveway and here's some of that in the staging area awaiting to be made into a privacy fence:

thanks Dave...maybe one of these days I'll build some wood sheds like you have. I like your setup.

Aren't you on the dry side of the rockies? You probably don't need a wood shed.
That first picture is a great photo. I saw it & said WOW.
Great angle, wood row looks endless, blue sky, warm wood color***real good photo.
Almost smell the wood & feel the heat it's going to produce.
Dog likes it so much it's on guard duty (sleepily on duty) :)

No doubt, looks great. Smart dog, someone has to protect the stash.

I think dogs like that because it is warmer there. Hey, I'd like to just sit by that pile once in a while too. By a wood pile is a great place to sit and think or just relax.

Good looking dog there! Probably enjoying the reflection of heat and shelter from wind. Our horses tend to stand on one side of the barn for the same reason.

Looks like you got a good thing going on there!

Not to get off topic, but where is the "Front Range" . . . and what is the winter like . . . right now I'm looking to the future and trying to figure out where to retire to . . . Colorado may be in the running.

Yeah its pretty darn dry here. I think I want to build a shed just to build a shed:)

Thanks for the nice words. Most of my pics are crap from my iphone but that pic was shot with my D200 and a 10-20mm Sigma ultrawide shot at 10mm. Love that lens, lots of fun!

Lol, sleepily on duty, that pretty much sums her up.

Hey Jake - The front range is the eastern part of the Rockies right against the foothills I think is the best way to describe it. This includes the Denver metro area. The winters down here are awesome IMO. We average 60 inches a year so you get your snow fix but 300+ days of sunshine per year as well usually means it snows, melts completely, snows, melts, etc. This year compared to New England made Denver seem like Florida. Its been pretty warm and we havent got much snow. Its a really dry climate, especially compared to SW Virginia where I moved from.
Of course, 30 minutes west of Denver and its a whole different world. BeetleKill could talk about that with where he lives.

But the economy is pretty good, lots of firefighting job opportunities I would assume since its a slightly large city (nm,you're going to retire). The tech industry is pretty good and of course lots of outdoor activities, almost too many (I ski, backpack, mountain bike, hunt, fish, play with chainsaws, etc.) but all that makes for a good retirement:) Of course the Rockies are beautiful and massive. I've been out here for 12 years this May and my wife has been out here (shes from Canada) for 10 years and we just love it.

Is that all cottonwood? How do you like burning it? Do you ever get your hands on some oak, ash, or other hardwood?

Yep, the tree services dump the wood for free in our driveway but this usually means cottonwood. Oak and ash are not a native species out here so its really hard to come by as is any hardwood or you pay a premium for it if you buy it ($400/cord). I did find a tiny bit of Red Oak that the city cut down last weekend but thats really rare. Sometimes I'll get some silver Maple and Elm. But pine and cottonwood are by far the most common. Anything above 6000-7000ft and its almost all pine.

I burned mostly lodgepole pine this season, which I really like. The cottonwood wont be ready until next season but I've heard it burns pretty similar to pine (quick but hot and no coals) so I think it should be pretty good. I probably have around 4-5 cords of cottonwood right now (2.5 split) and will try to have around 10 cords c/s/s for next season. From a BTU perspective, thats like 5 cords of oak.

I hear ya Dennis, I find myself gravitating towards the wood pile anytime I'm in the backyard:)

I just set that 1st pic as my desktop background..hope you don't mind!
My two favorite things, wood and dogs!

Beutiful pic, keep 'em coming!

That really is a great picture. Thanks for putting it up. I lived one year in Boulder. It was great. Unfortunately, those paying the bills moved me on to other things.

I would too and thanks for rubbing it in.

Lol,j/k...dont feel bad, most good wood like oak, maple, etc. is not native to this region so Cottonwood actually isnt that bad out here. Especially free Cottonwood that is delivered in my driveway.

Nice fence, did you get a building permit? :vampire: Looks like a nice supply of fence, how much fence do you have and what moisture content do you like your fence when you burn it?

Hehe! Well, to code enforcement, its a stack of firewood and not a fencewhich according to local municipal code requires firewood to simply be "stacked" with no restriction on size or quantity:)

To us its a privacy fence that we may burn next season depending on if the primary (non-fence) stacks get completely used up. The fence when completed will be 60ft long total by 6ft high by 16" wide average= 3.75 cords. MC content of the fence in its sunny/breezy location, in this semi-arid climate by next season should be well below 20%.

I have the same kind of fence at my house, but it is made out of Red and White Oak, Cherry, Ash and Black Locust.
