i been getting a slight smoke problem on start up. since thw stove has only started 3-4 times and couldnt find the problem.but this morning i saw smoke from the corner by the hinge. the stove is a 55shahl. the stove has run flawlessly other wise. is there any thing i can do to try and get a better seel? thanks

The door seal shouldnt be leaking "Out"? I dont doubt you. But the Firebox is under negative pressure. If anything, it should be sucking air in through that spot.

If the firebox were under positive pressure, then it would come out there. Or in the event of a power failure. Definitely strange?

Could it be coming out near where the hot air comes out (exchange tubes)? Most leaks are in the venting system at the stove adapter or other joints inside the house. This smoke then rises and comes out the tubes.

What type of venting system do you have (brand)?
Also, have you done the dollar bill test on the gasket to check it?

i used selkirk. i havent done the dollar test but when i shut the stove off. i saw this. theres a space as wide as my finger where the gasket should meet. thats rite betwwen where the hinges are.

At startup there is sometimes (depends upon the stove, ash level in burn pot, the pellets, and the igniter) a lot of smoke, more than some exhaust fans can pull out so some of it can leak out, there are other conditions under which this can occur, try other air movers operating just as one example.

If there is "No" gasket there and its the width of your finger. Then it should be replaced. Or if you can cut the edges straight and put a 1"-2" peice in there, to fill the gap. I would replace it so there is less seams (if there os no gasket there at all).

That would be a pretty significant leak and could affect the performance (burn and efficiency) of the unit.

looks like one of my PAH units, the gasket apparantly "retracted" a bit when installed.

go here... http://www.englanderstoves.com/warranty/warranty-claim.html

fill out the fields and submit, we'll ship you a replacement gasket, easy to replace just remove the old one , scrape out the bulk of the old adhesive apply the new (included) adhesive, install the gasket, trim it so the ends butt together , close the door and let it set up for a bit then fire the unit back up. first fire after the replacement you may get a slight "burning celery" smell for a few minutes as the adhesive cures out but after its run for a bit it will go away

Looks like a new gasket is needed here.

Well I guess everyone must admit the service on a Englander is swift. When you ask a question on a open forum and the company replies give us a call and we'll make it right. I don't think there was ten posts before Mike was on it.
