OXFORD — Quick action by a neighbor may have saved a home from fire after a window-mounted pellet stove caught fire Wednesday.

Oxford Fire Chief Scott Hunter said homeowners Bob and Cindy Lavertu weren't at their home at 142 Robinson Hill Road when the stove caught fire. Neighbor Melvin May noticed the fire and called 911 before rushing across the street and pulling the smoking unit out of the house.

When firefighters arrived, the stove was on the lawn. Hunter said firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Hunter said May inhaled some smoke and burned his hand in the process but refused medical treatment.

Damage from the fire amounted to about $5,000, Hunter said, including the $1,500 value of the pellet stove. He said the Lavertus plan to close off that room tonight, but the house is safe to sleep in. Most of the damage was from smoke.

Bob Lavertu owns Bob's Affordable Computing, a computer service and repair business in Oxford.

That stove sure doesn't look like the US Stove one. Does anyone else make one?
