I want to mount a mantel at 54 inches off the ground. Given the metal framing kit that is required above the fireplace, the mantel would need to be secured / anchored in the metal framing. Is that doable and advisable? I'm looking at a piece of reclaimed fir that is 6' long and 6" x 5.5" so it won't be light.

IIRC I used Square tubing to help support my stone mantle. The wall above the mantle steps back from the face of the stove, which allowed me to do this.
