Well, it wasn't the furnace itself that was especially striking, it was the fact that it was sitting inside a wooden boat on a pretty little lake in the mountains of Maine. It is apparently a replica of a design that was used around the Great Lakes. The guy had some nice hardwood scraps from a local mill to fuel it, and a cool steam whistle that sounded like a locomotive when he blew it.
 
Every year in the fall there is a steam launch regatta on Lake George. Somehow it is a bit unnerving seeing an open wood fire in a wooden boat.
