I use the ash shovel upside down to plow everthing to the back and then drag the coals back forward.

I shove the ash to the rear and then I pull the live coals to the front and don't care if the air inlet to the firebox is covered. I guess that is letting the dog dig?

I have a pair of fire dogs that I made from railroad spikes and most of the larger coals stay contained between them. I pull most of the coals forward and dig a trough up the middle, if I want a hot fire or if I want to burn the coals down. Most of the time I just chuck the logs in and letter rip.
