Yep, In Alaska, frozen splits easier, specially spruce.
What's holding it together?
 
Is the round buried partially in the snow? That's the way it works for me this time of year out in the woods. One swing of the old maul pushes it down in the snow and makes it stand there all by itself until I'm done with it.
