surge protection. would this work?

That looks like it might help for surges and brownouts, but it doesn't appear to correct any issues with the cycle phase. If your generator is running too fast or slow, you may not be generating 60 cycles a second. It doesn't appear that this regulator will correct that issue. You could have issues with your control board and motors if you aren't running close to 60 Hz. For the best protection, you should use something that generates a true sine wave or something similar. Stay away from items that say "Stepped Sine Wave" or "Simulated Sine wave", these use a square wave that can cause issues with your control board and motors.

Mike Holton from Englander took a look at this and felt that it would work well on his stoves.

They're a little more expensive, but they should cover any situation you can throw at them.
