I got an app but thinking about it only a certain percentage of cars are hitting the mileage limit before time. And then if they are doing this they certainly wouldn’t apply this to every car that’s out of warranty. More chances to get caught.

Key difference is this cheat didn't lead to thousands of premature deaths due to NOx pollution (mostly in EU, for the record).

If true, then the underlying cause is the same, greed. It's all about saving corporate $$ and making more profit.
