I just got back from the farm again. It was wet but it was also just about peak of the color season there.

The bottom of my gravel pit had up to 5' of water in it :!:

Great pictures cowboy billy, about the fourth picture down what was planted and is growing? Tempted to take the four wheeler in the gravel pit?

zap

Thanks Zap

I put a little of everything out there. Winter wheat, rye, oats, peas. And a brassica grass seed mix that had ****. turnips and some other stuff in it. The fourwheeler is kinda heavy to be jumping with. It would be great with a dirt bike but I don't own one anymore I know I would hurt myself and I don't heal as fast as I used to!

Nice pictures!

My wife and I are headed to the UP for the first time this week, arriving Wednesday in the porcupine mountains and camping. We plan to tour eastward along lake Superior and are staying at Mackinac Island before heading back Sunday. Really excited about being there!

Be careful. You won't want to leave.

CB - great pics. Fall is the best season. Question for you (feel free to tell me none of your beeswax!), but I was wondering what you guys did up there for employment? I see many folks post here from what look like beautiful, but seemingly remote, locations and always wonder what sorts of jobs were available.

Thanks CJ

You'll have a great time up there!!!! I'm hoping to head back UP thursday.

Hi Tim

I live 22 miles north of the Ohio border. I would move to the farm if I could find a decent job!!!! Most of the good jobs around there get handed father to son.

CJRages, if you have the time, visit Copper Harbor. Right near you will see Brockway Mountain Drive. I highly recommend that for a very scenic drive. Hope you have a good trip.

Billy, thanks for posting the photos.

Savage,
Not sure yet if we will make it that far north. I'd like to check out the Copper Harbor area though. Thanks for the tip on the scenic highway. We have been planning this trip for about 2 months and are very happy about the latest weather forecast for this week. Solid mid 60's and sunshine through Saturday. I know it could have easily been rainy or quite chilly this time of year.

Billy - thanks for your response. Sorry that you can't live up there full time! Just make sure you keep that place in the family and keep posting those pics.

CJ you should certainly drive to Copper Harbor. Stop at the JamPot along the way.

It's a bakery run by monks. Great, worth the drive.

Take the Pictured Rocks boat tour out of Munising if the weather is good and the lake is calm.

Have a great time.

It's been several years since we made it back for the fall. Very jealous. Leaves here won't turn for a while now.

Tim - the main "good" employment in the UP is either medical, education (NMU, MTU, Lake State, public schools), and what's left of the mining. Some folks do well in construction, always a few lawyers keeping fed, etc. There's a lot of service jobs tied to tourism. Adds up to high unemployment and pretty marginal opportunity especially outside of the few larger towns. I left after college to work in DC; I would move back full-time if I could afford it, but there's no jobs for me unless I tried to get an academic position. Instead I'm now the city slicker that shows up in the summer and winter. (And in DC I'm the mountain man that splits his own firewood.) We do plan to retire there.

DiscoInferno - thanks for the additional insight. As an engineer, there are a few opportunities for me in automotive related companies but I have a great job where we're at in NEOhio and certainly wouldn't leave to head to a very questionable industry. The comments simply confirm what I thought I had already figured out - it's hard to have your cake and eat it too!
