what is considered overfire?

had the bk colar up to 800f today with buncha small branches, most the rest the top was 600f, would u consider this a overfire?

I'd be OK with that. If things were glowing then I'd be concerned.

What was your thermostat set at?

Not sure what overfire would be on your stove but certainly not 600. Maybe 800? Maybe 700? Ours is 700 maximum recommended.
 
800f for a few must be ok,well thats good.. my harbor freight thermo lazer pointer thing must read high too who knows
 
I wouldn't even worry about it. I've had the top of my BK to 900*-1000* before. The book says glowing stove = overfire.
