I'd rather have a MS440 for the money but holy crap this is a nice, original condition 038 Magnum.
4 Hours left to get in on this thing.

Maybe I am reading more into it than I should, but if the guy has an actual compression tester for a chainsaw, I suspect it has been rebuilt.
I've had the itch for an 038 mag forever. But for that kinda money....the itch will just have to go unscratched . Nice looking saw though.Compression testers are relatively inexpensive and not specific to chainsaw work.
It's pretty common practice now to post a shot with the compression tester when selling a saw. I wouldn't read to much into that.
The saw was clean, but not "too clean" if ya know what I mean.
$650 + $40 shipping for a 25-30 year-old saw.
With the line-up you have, I doubt you'd be impressed. Kinda like a stock big-block in a pickup vs the new diesels. Nostalgia aplenty but it would sit on the self with a 044 and a worked over 460 in the stable.I've had the itch for an 038 mag forever. You're likely correct. But it's still a saw that i'd like to own .With the line-up you have, I doubt you'd be impressed. Kinda like a stock big-block in a pickup vs the new diesels. Nostalgia aplenty but it would sit on the self with a 044 and a worked over 460 in the stable.
Never underestimate the power of nostalgia.Wowser. Winning bid is $650. I'd rather spend another $70 and have a shiny new 362.
Minor topic re-direct....
What do you guys think of an 038 super? I dont have any "big" saws, but I do have an 026 and an 028 Super... (and an Eager Beaver, but we dont talk about that....)
OK, quick question...
This saw came with a Stihl full chisel chain on it, no bumper links. Trying to figure out what type of chain it is, the only thing I can find is that it says "E4" on the links. Im guessing its Rapid Super, but Im just curious if its Klassic. Any pointers? Most of my other chains are Carlton, so this one is new to me. Looks like someone filed on the top of the cutters with a flat file....
Have a 038AV at work. We use it to cut trees that have fallen on our roads or the fence line. Works fine, but I didn't think it was anything special.... like "wow this saw really cuts!". I'd compare it to a 290 as far as cutting performance, maybe slightly better.
