Hi, love my new stove so much on the first floor I am thinking about putting a free standing or insert into the basement. I have piping down there for a wood stove which I had them take out when i bought the house last year, but they left all the piping in the fireplace... Now when I look at my fireplace I see the big black piping, it is capped off but no damper so basement is cold - all electric heat too so no furnace to warm the space. I know the chimney has a stainless liner. Is there anyway of hooking up a pellet stove to this wood stove piping? Do I have to go all the way up the chimney?

Thanks in advance!

So you have a brick chimney with a metal stove pipe inside of it?

Good question. I would think you would need to take all that out and go with a pellet vent from top to bottom. There are adapters to hook it to the piping but I am not sure that's legal to do in this case if it's already lining a brick chimney.

Hell, I shouldn't even have posted since I am of no help but at least this post will get me subscribed.

I see that you have A harman if you look in the manual it shows how it can be hooked to a fireplace or wood stove chimney. You need to increase pipe size to 4" coming off of the stove. Check with local building code to see if you need to run pipe all the way to the top. Hope this helps.

Though it it permitted in the manual, MA Building code requires a stainless steel liner in all masonry applications. You can vent into Class A manufactured chimneys by code, buy often they create too much draft and your heat exchange could become inefficient. Anything from the stove to the chimney need to be "L" vent.

i have one of my stoves hooked up to 6 inch class a wood stove pipe with no problems at all

I already have the stainless steel liner. Just not sure if I have to run pellet piping all the way up. If the chimney is lined with ss, isnt that enough?

Should be fine as long as it goes all the way to the top.

Sealed from the L vent to the top. Most wood burning liners start at the top of the smoke shelf.
