Feeling the Heat

In the never ending search for a better pellet around here, I have found someone with Lignetics (hardwood) for $200 per ton....or $225 delivered. The hitch is that I'd probably have to pay for delivery as the place is about 1 1/2hr drive.

The best I've found at any box stores here are Somersets....which are becoming very rare now. The prices on these are up anywhere from $200/ton to $225/ton. Of course, that's hauling your own.

How do the Lignetics compare to Somersets?

Also, this place is a lumber yard and is pressing their own softwood pellets which are primarily sold as horse bedding. However, he has people burning them too. He says some love them and some hate them. The softwoods are the same price as Lignetics.

I will probably drive up and get like 5 bags of each to try.

Your experiences and opinions much appreciated.

Wow timing is everything. I picked up 10 bags of Ligies last weekend just because. I put in 3 tons of sumersets and that is what I have been burning till this last week. also burned both last year along with a ton of Hardwood heats.

Based on my experiences this year and last.

All three pellets have about the same heat level. I would say at steady state and constant feed they are within 5 degrees of each other.

Where they are different is in ash:

Again this is my stove my setup I can not speak for anyone elses.

The Lignetics have a higher volume of ash that seems to be light and fluffy. I woudl say twice the volume of the other pellets.

The Sumersets on the othe hand have a more dense ash that allows me to burn longer between cleanings. one side note this ash can be a little chunky but it breaks up with the slightest touch in the daily scrape out.

Remember the more ash on the heat exchanger the less efficinet the stove. I like sumersets this year.

I have burned both Green Label Lignetics and Somersets in my stove and found the heat to be the same (measured with a K type thermocouple).

Also... I have burned some softwood and really like them.. Next year I will probably only be burning them.. They burn really HOT!

All units will vary, but the Somersets are hotter in my Quad (only one I measure temps with). The ash is finer and lighter in color.

The Ligs are a good pellet. Definitely nothing wrong with them. I am burning the hardwood/conifer blend. Also the Presto-Logs are just as hot as the Green labels (maybe even a couple degrees hotter) just have a darker ash.

I find it amazing how different pellet reviews vary.
we are burning Lignetics blue and yellow label right now. $230 a ton and they burn hot with less than average hot.
i will never burn Prest-o- logs again. tons of ash and very low heat.
Funny how they vary stove to stove.

Funny how they vary stove to stove.

Pellets vary batch to batch. My 2 tons of Green labels are 2 different batches. One os darker and shorter than the other.

Bought my Presto-logs last Feb all were ran on the same day by tue same operator. Almost on Par with Somersets (heat wise/little more ash though)..

Our stoves are almost the same (PS-50 and CB 1200) same manufacturer, same motors, burn pot, ignitor. My Quad just utilizes a different Heat exchange system (tubes).
But pellet batches can vary greatly. Depending on the Manufacturer. Some are more consistent than others (I.E.- Somersets/very consistent)

Not the best price around but not far off, especially for the delivered price. Somersets are nearly extinct here it seems. The same place has "a few" left. I didn't get any clarification on "a few".

We have just a few stove dealers in the area but NONE sell pellets. They all refer you to the box stores and the farm stores.

If I find myself with a free afternoon maybe I'll run up and get some for trial. I'm particularly interested in trying the softwood pellets they make on site. Could be a hidden gem.

Anyone have this type ??? believe it or not i got these at sears!! Hows that!! I paid 6 bucks a bag. Which is a little high imo maybe with a coupon or something? Hmmm now im thinking? Also im burning Somerset as we speak and out of the two hands down somerset wins for pure heat and lower ash ! Just a side note every pellet I've burned has alot of ash i seen a comment somewere that these pellet companys make more off of high moisture stuff ! Its like cut for drugs so they make more money pellets weight more with moisture! Somerset was a good dry 40lbs of fire

I have only burned the lignetics hardwood/softwood blend. I think they are very comparable to the Somersets. The heat is about the same as well as the ash content. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I would buy either one if I could find them for the right price. Good luck!

The pres to logs i tried were alot more ash than somerset with close to same heat output. Would buy again.

The couple green bag lignetics were ashy also but a bit less heat than the others.

I just picked up a couple of bags of Lignetics (Green Label) today to test. I will be putting them in this afternoon, to test burn tonight. I will give results to my burn, tommorrow. I will be running these on a factory setting of 4-7-1, for the Englander stove that I have listed in my signature. I determine this by the length of pellet. The longer the average pellet size, the higher the 1st number. The 2nd number is determined by how hard the pellets are. The harder the pellet, the more air it needs to burn that pellet. The 3rd number, I never change. It just determines at what temp. the room air blower starts up. They were $5.00 a bag, $215 per ton. They do have the saying: MADE FROM THE FINEST HARDWOOD SAWDUST, right in middle of bag. Here is a picture of the bag & I will give my results, tommorrow.

In My opinion they are both great Pellets and I would buy them both. However Somersets are a bit hotter and less ash. If I can find Somersets I will grab a ton right away because they sell fast. Lowes had them for three weeks and sold 20 ton.

I have burned Lignetics green label also. In my stove they burned good, but not impressive.
Somersets on the other hand, have burned the best of ALL pellets I have tried over the years.
I would buy them in a minute.

I burnt 8 bags of White (blue) Ligs.

I liked them. Better than my tried and true Greene Golds.

All are White Bags...... What color were the lettering?? GREEN, BLUE, ORANGE???

Straight Ballin......Somersets are better than the Greene Golds. Cant Compare if you have not tried.

Just sayin......

Blue's aint bad..... But Green is Prob better.....Which I have... And my Lig Presto-Logs from last year are better than them............. And Somersets are better than them.

10 Fold. ;-P

Not being a Smart A$$.... Just sayin, if you never tried Somersets. Now is a good time to find some.. Have been burnin for a lil while now. And they are by FAR, the hottest pellet. (Also the MOST consistent year to year).

Ligs aren't bad. But they are no Somersets.

I wonder if I am straight pounding that new ass in the living room with Somersets ?

Will I get too hot ?

I bought a bag of Lignetics for $8....LMFAO. No where near as good as Somersets that I got for $3.49 a bag. Not as bad as that Indiana Hardwood garbage though......

Somersets are as hot but definetly cleaner burning than the ligs. What gets me with the ligs is one batch is decent and the next will be much dirtier. Not as consistent as the Somersets or any flooring pellet out there. Its the inhouse fiber control IMHO!
