The wind has been horrible this winter and this has happened at least three times this winter for the first time ever .As some
backgrown on my set up I have a Napolean 1400 pedastal I have been a wood burner for around 15 years
with this current set up it comes out the stove and 45 degrees out to thimble then out and stainless triple wall
out side the house and is about leval with top of the roof.Well this wind has been blowing hard and I can listen
when it gustes and it will put out my fire and I mean a good oak fire then puff it come back on blazing well its making
every thing in my house smell like smoke it blowing back through the door seal and somewhere else in the stove.I know
I need a door seal but how do I preavent this? Add more stack its blowing right back down.

Quit closing the primary air all the way down.

How "seasoned" is your Oak?? When was it cut, split, and stacked??

To come down a chimney after a fire is established and blow smoke back through your door gasket??

The door gasket should be changed immediately and maybe run a hotter fire to establish a better draft. Once its established, it should stay going, in one direction (Up).

I have a good fire blazing now. The wind actually increases my draft. I have 4 ft (double wall) in the basement, then a 90°, to 3 ft horizontal into the thimble, to 18 ft of Class A triple wall outside.

Where abouts in NE Ohio. Im near the Ashland/Lorain/Medina Co border area (Wellington)..

I work with a guy who is probably reading this right now but isn't a member that lives near Wellington.

Im in NW Ohio and every time its happened it been 50 plus winds also my oak is
two years seasoned and my pipe baffel is open as is my air control I have to keep door closed but still
puffing only way to get it to quit was to go out and take off the clean out on my thimble and smoke come billowing out
of the cleanout ..

the stove is not air tight, so a door gasket wont stop air from coming out the primary and secondary air inlets.

if this is happening only in windy conditions, have you considered a directional chimney cap? or something like the windbeater cap from homesaver

getting the pipe above the ridge might also help

Add another 3' section and replace that gasket.Good start!

I had this problem when I first started. Turned out my stove pipe wasnt long enough...

Only mine was worse... I have had instances where the wind would gust, and the down ward pressure would put the fire out, then about 5 seconds later, it would 'explode' into a roaring fire again, with such force it would literally rattle the doors... and this was with the stove running wide open.

In those instances, I shut all the dampers, and put the fire out... and said forget it, and waited til the wind settled down...

However now that I have added stove pipe outside I no longer have this issue.

We had it happen once that the wind was blowing things around inside the stove (ash, flames). High winds also. Only once out of several high wind situations this year, I think it must have been the perfect direction/windspeed/air temp combo.

Wind is what we have all winter long so I have delt with this problem before. With my old stove it was really bad, a wind directional cap fixed it. My new stove came with a "wind resistant cap" and it really does work pretty well. Before installing my new insert I also raised the chimney a few more feet above the highest point in the roof. The highest point is about 15' away. Now the only wind problem I get is increased draft.
