Stopped by my local TSC and saw that the 22 ton splitters were on special at 999. The 35 was on sale too, as was the new Speeco spitter. It looked like all were 200 off regular. Noted the 22 ton now sports a 190cc B&S engine with a streamline look. Just a heads-up.........

I was looking them over this past weekend myself and noticed they made a lot of improvements in the last three years. It got me thinking maybe I can sell my 28 ton and get a new 22 ton for very little $ out of my pocket.

I was at TSC today here in mid-Michigan and that same splitter, the Huskee 22-ton was $899.
I talked to the manager and offered him $800 out the door but he said no.

I then went to Lowes and looked at a Troy-Built 27-ton with the Honda engine for $1399.
I could not find a manager there to make an offer but it is a much heavier and sturdier looking splitter.

I think they have always had the 190 B&S engine. Maybe it just looks a little different now.

I borrowed a Huskee 35 ton splitter. I tried to drive off with the jack down, and when it hit the edge of the pavement, it twisted the tongue like a pretzel. Turns out it's only .090" steel. HUH. I went to TS and talked to the manager, and asked to get a price quote for a new one. He had no idea. After a week, I went back to check, and the other manager said he'd look into it. Never heard back from either. So, I'd be screwed if I had no metal fabrication skills. What I'm getting at is don't expect TS to fully service what they sell......

TSC doesn't staff their stores with mechanics and parts countermen. I would call the Speeco 1-800- number in your manual and ask them about part # 40127200. Make sure you give 'em an earful about TSC not giving satisfactory service and you may get something nice like a discount, or free shipping.

Just bought a 22 ton Huskee this weekend, looking forward to working that thing hard. $999

I've had issues with my Huskee 22 ton, the TS I bought from gave me the name and number of the local Huskee authorized repair shop.....so far I had a Wheel Bearing that would go beyond the taper in the Axle popping of the Seal and causing the wheel to just wobble, never being tight.......Hydraulic Leak from the Hose.....and just this past weekend, the Throttle Linkage broke......called Speeco, told them the repair shop wanted three weeks to repair the Wheel issue.....Speeco sent me a complete Wheel/Tire combo, complete with Bearings.....just put it on the Splitter...fixed.....other issues will be loooked at once I'm done spliiting, and can let go for a mnth.

If its the type with the old school bolt on guide wedges it will be problematic for sure. Speeco has had their share of issues but that so called built in log cradle idea is totally maintenance free.

First off, I'd like to thank all who participate on this forum for your insight and experience. I have been reading up on splitters for the last month or so and have learned alot in this forum.

I bought a Huskee 22 ton splitter last week and put it together over the weekend. I went to my local Tractor Supply a few weeks ago and the one 22 ton they had looked like it had been used and possibly returned. I told the sales kid that I would be leary buying that one and if they had more coming in soon. I asked him to order one and not put it together. I picked up the splitter in the crate knowing that it was brand new.

I had read here that putting them together was a snap, and it was. I also read where many people had problems with their Briggs and Stratton engines starting. I was very happy when it started on the second pull. I split a few rounds and it went right through them.

I had always rented splitters and figured it was time to get my own. I burn about 2 cords a winter as supplemental heat in my insert (smoker), which does nicely in our 1650 sf ranch home.

It has been pretty hot here, Central Ohio, and will wait for some cooler weather to get through about 4 cords of rounds. It will be nice to not have to rush through the splitting to return the splitter!

Welcome, Dave. Sounds like you got the new splitter up and running just fine. I have a MTD 20-something Ton with a Briggs, and I've never had a hint of a problem with it. Hang around, we're just a bunch of wood-burning junkies. ;lol Rick

I have had this argument with my local TSC store more times than I can count. They insist on selling everything assembled, and will not let us take anything home in a box. Too many items I have purchased at TSC, where they have done the assembly, have had a problem or total failure traceable back to improper assembly.

I'm not sure why the store management thinks the 18-year old kid they have assembling stuff for $7/hour with a monkey wrench and hammer can do a better job than the guy buying the tool, but their insistence on this has forced me to start buying my equipment elsewhere. Damn shame, because I used to spend quite a bit of time and money there, but the frustration is simply not worth the few dollars I'd save by buying from them.

I would definitely NOT buy a log splitter assembled at my local TSC. Based on my history with them, you have a good chance of finally figuring out where the assembler screwed you, right after the warranty expires.

There was no issue about leaving it in the crate. This was my first time shopping at TSC, so I have no issues with them. They were very polite and helpful.

Good! Note I said, "my local TSC", not "your local TSC." Not sure whether all of them are the same on this issue.
