I live in Dutchess County, NY. I'm about 30m from the Conneticut border. I'm trying to get the Harman XXV installed for $4200 or less including piping and installation. I'm finding the prices from NY and CT dealers anywhere from $4450 - $4550. That is with the $300 coupon that is available on this stove until September 16th.

The funny thing is, if i order from Ct there will be no sales tax....yet the price is the same. Doesn't make sense. Should I just install it myself? I'm middle of the road handy. Is it worth saving the 450 to 600 in installation costs?

It's fairly easy if you are patient and plan 100% first. There are many good guides on here. I am a do it your selfer so I am a lil bias :) i saved 300 making my own hearth, so I saved around 1k. They want around 600-900 for installs up here.

Did mine myself for under 4K total.

Stove, Piping and Hearth.

I think I paid about 5k a year ago for a new XXV and install, so your prices are already ahead of the game, IMHO.

$3500 or so, in my area (not including the $300 Harman discount- that brings it to $3200 or so)....crated......pipe, installation, delivery, floor protection, installation, sales tax is extra. And that price includes two tons of pellets with the stove.....Amazing how prices differ so in different areas. !!!

Dont know about price increases, but 2 years ago in Kittery ME, a friend had XXV installed for around 3500, included 1 ton pellets. 4200-4500 for the unit sounds steep.

well, prices of a couple years ago are somewhat irrelevant at the current time( can you get a gallon of gas for what it was 2 years ago?).....all you can do is call around, see what the current "spot" prices are, and act accordingly...and dont forget, price should be only half of your decision, the dealer is the other half.......of course, this philosophy will only apply to some folks, to others the price is the only object, till something goes wrong.....

??...... Sorry LW, you said yourself. that the prices are still around 3500 in your area. 3200 after Harman discount, including 2 tons fuel. Does that mean they were 2500 2 years ago in that same area?
I think that area pricing differences are more in play here. But as I havnt price shopped lately, I may be all wet.

maybe....the best best might be just to call the Kittery dealer and ask........yep, there are also local idiosunchracies in stove pricing......competition, what the market will bear, etc. Prices have increased though, costs at around 10-12%, depending on stove model..........Ive no idea what the harman discount was, if any 2 years ago, but those were better economic times than we have today (tho some might disagree)....in reality though, the OP isnt gonna buy their unit in Kittery- if he/she gets one, it'll be near their home, so thats the only relevant price here.

I just poked through my receipts -- I paid $4600 in September 2011 in Central CT. My dealer did not offer the lowest price, but provides superior service.

PS --I should quote myself more often. I feel like the loudest guy in the room.

Where did you purchase it from? Central CT is prob to far for them to service and install. Also do you find that it heats your upstairs at all? Can I have your impression of the Harman XXV. What setting do you normally keep it on?

I'll PM you the dealer info.

Heating with a pellet stove is all about location and layout. We have an open floor plan, but because we couldn't put the stove in an ideal location, it's hard for us to move heat upstairs. Some gets up there -- enough to take the edge off on warmer nights. Mostly, though, we're heating the upstairs with oil (though our oil consumption is way down).

I love the stove -- I set it to Room Temp 70 and it keeps my entire downstairs at 68 (remember my stove isn't in an ideal spot). Very few clinkers -- just keep it clean and fed and you'll love the heat it throws.

Absolutely worth the investment, IMHO.

True.

Good luck deucedown. Its a great unit.
