Buying a chimney Liner

ok I can get flex single wall stainless for $18 a foot local.

48" rigid stainless for $80

or an entire kit on ebay, for $310 (shipped)

Bought both of mine off of eBay and they are great. Different vendor.

I am ordering one today. I don't need one but the "extra" that you say comes with it sounds great to me.

what was the shipping time ?

Id order today, if I thought it would be here this week,.

I mispelled such, in the first post, but for some reason, its funny, so im leaving it.

Ill go home and measure, IM not sure if I need 20 or 25 feet.

here is another 25' kit, its $13/foot, the 20' kit is $15 a foot.

I got a 6x30, and a 6x40 with chimney caps, 2 piece t's, top plates, all included, for 1000. Off ebay. Came saran wrapped, like mike said. I actually just finished installing the 40 footer. I'll put picture up this week, and I hope to burn tonight. Crossing fingers. IT's been a year of collecting stoves, chimneys, etc. Argh.

Cool, I just bought one, and paid $315 total shipped for 6"x20
I hope it gets here in 2 days, Ill be warm this week!

I went home and measured at lunch, I also noticed I have a clay lining inside my chimney.

Now if I figure out how to remove the damper from the old masonry fireplace.

any ideas on that one?
 
I'm guessing if you go for the "suck" option, it improves your draft.

As far as the damper goes it is usually just taking out a cotter pin and taking the plate out. If the frame is too narrow for the liner to come through you can do like I did and cut the frame to let it through. I tried a Sawzall and finally just grabbed a plain old hacksaw and the frame cut out in no time. You just need to cut enough out of the middle of the frame to let the liner through the middle.

Remember that once you cut that frame it ain't never gonna be a fireplace again.

I am going to bet that removing the damper won't be your problem, as noted, pull a cotter pin or 2 and she'll lift right out. The problem will be the piece of cast iron on the opposite side of the damper, where the damper control rod locks in at different heights. Mine was centered in the damper, and right in the way of the flex. I needed that puppy sawed out to get the liner to fit.

Same thing with mine. I was so envious of the guys with the latch on the side. I circled around the job of cutting that damn thing out of there for twenty-one years. Finally one afternoon the Genny Lights kicked in and it was history an hour later.

Of course I had to move one little six hundred and fifty pound obstacle out of the way first.
 
Ill check it out tonight, post some pics, and try really hard NOT get a bunch of junk in my eye like last night.

PPE is required for me, even when not working, im clumsy and bleed alot.

I wish I had a small plasma cutter, itll be tough to get a sawzall or hack saw up there, maybe a die grinder and cut off wheel.
 
Could someone tell me how hard it is to put in a chimney liner. I need one for my Avalon Astoria Pellet stove and got quotes anywhere from $1600 to $830!! It is directly vented into a masonry chimney right now where a wood stove used to be vented....19ft high chimney. Thanks

Yeah. That's the ticket. Use something that will put out your eyes and set your shirt on fire! Get the hacksaw. Take it easy and take a break every few minutes. After you have cut about half way through smack it with a hammer and duck. It's cast iron. It wants to break. On second thought, duck and then hit it. And just cut out a place for the liner to come through. The rest of the frame can come in handy later right where it is.
 
Ive got a really funny story about catching my shirt on fire, using a plasma cutter to cut out of spec turbine engine cases up so they wouldnt be sold outside the US.

in a huge ventalator.

yeah, it was comical, to EVERYONE watching.

on the INSTALL.

I hope its as easy as dropping it down from the top, screwing it to the cap, and screwing it to the collar and or blocking plate at the bottom?

does it need to be strapped along its length? like midway down the chimney?
do I need to hire a midget? or ask Santa to do it on his return trip?

You need to secure it every 16"all the way down the flue...........................................................................................................Naw I'm just messin with you. Even santa wouldn't take that job on.........Just remember that lawmaker Murphey......... His laws are still on the books on liner installs ;-P

Nothing is as easy as you think ;-)

BE carefull ordering form that guy on EBay. Make sure you specify the lenghth of flex you need. I purchased my liner from him last year and the 25 feet included the t pipe connection which I was not using.My liner was about 1 foot short. Just a heads up.

Which eBay seller was it? Folks here need to know this stuff. Both of mine were a couple of feet longer than spec'ed.
