My manager at work, knows I stock up on kindling at work and out of the blue says he has about 1/2 cord of red oak he no longer needs or wants. He has a masonry fireplace, but because many years ago, his wife got sick and the chemo treatments she had damaged her lungs, they no longer burn wood. The good thing is she is fine now.

So I tell him, I'll take it and he says please do (actually tried to give it away a few times). When he told me it was red oak, I was thrilled. I go to his house, and he has it perfectly stacked in his 2 car garage.............since 1998!

I don't burn as much as a lot of you guys do, but this for me came at just the right time.

Nice score Jjm457. That is the cats ass. Free wood.

that is an awesome find...you are very lucky

Nice score.

Nice Manager !

Since 1988! Wow! Wood older than ours....finally.

Actually it was 1998, either way I'll take it. In the opinion of the masses here, since I have a small firebox, should I mix the oak with the other wood I have (which I'm not certain what all I actually have), so I don't use it all from the get go?

Well seasoned oak is one of the best for long and hot burn times. If you can save it for those coldest winter days & nights you will love its performance. Can you post a close up pic of your other wood ? There are some pretty good eyes on here at determining wood types, Sure would help on giving you some pointers.

Do you own a moisture meter? Curious as to what the numbers of almost 15 year seasoned oak is.

That's a great score,Jjm.Congrats.

It should between 10 & 14%,maybe a bit less depending on the normal humidity in his area. With the much needed light rain here past 2 days,it'd top out around 16-17% thanks to the higher than usual humidity.

Wow! Save that stuff for a severe winter storm. You'll stay warm, even during a power outage.
