State launches rebate program for some wood, pellet stoves

For the Cumberland Times-NewsCumberland Times-News
CUMBERLAND — The Maryland Energy Administration has launched a pilot rebate program for some of the cleanest wood and pellet stoves available, marking the first time that a state has integrated wood and pellet stoves into a renewable energy rebate program.

The pilot program offers a $400 rebate for wood stoves and $600 for pellet stoves. Wood stoves must emit less than half the particulates that are allowed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to be eligible.

“We are thrilled that Gov. (Martin) O’Malley and Malcolm Wolff, the director of the Maryland Energy Administration, extended the renewable energy grant program to appliances that low and middle-income families can afford,” said John Ackerly, the president of the Alliance for Green Heat.

The Maryland program is designed help families who do not have access to relatively cheap natural gas. The rebates are only offered to homes that heat with the most expensive fuels — oil, propane or electricity — and who are typically in less affluent, rural areas.

Delegate Heather Mizeur, who first introduced a bill in the Maryland House of Delegates to establish such a program last year, said, “Modern wood and pellet stoves offer rural families a way to participate in our clean energy future. For most Marylanders, especially those already coping with high heating and electricity costs, purchasing solar panels is out of the question.”

Full details of the program and the application can be found at http://energy.maryland.gov/Residential/woodstoves/index.html. Program funds are limited to $50,000 and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Darn. Getting ready to buy a Harman and none of the pellet stoves are on the list.

Hold the phone!

There is a Big mistake on that State Web Site!
I looked at all the PDFs on the Maryland State Site below
http://energy.maryland.gov/Residential/woodstoves/index.html
The PDFs that should be Eligible pellet stoves that Meet Washington Emission Standards are actually WOOD STOVES!

They should have put the following PDF on this site. Therefore You definetly ARE eligble!
See correct Eligible pellet wood stoves that Meet Washington Emission Standards list below!

I thought it was odd there were none. I bet this my be a pain to get this through. My better half works in Solar and deals with the grants and it is a pain to get them paid.

Thank you for posting this. Looks like all the Harman Pellet Stoves are on the list :)

Hello

The key is that the pellet stove "Emit no more than 2 grams of PM/hr" - Many pellet stoves meet this requirement easily!

Since they do not have the right pellet stove list, you may be the only one applying and should get the money easily! :)

Yes thank you for posting.

The application states you have to have it installed by a contractor and I plan on a self install. The GF is going to look over the papers in the morning at work.

I got the federal tax credit on my pellet stove and it too said it had to be installed by a contractor. Well they do not have anyone to come over and watch to see if a contractor is installing it! LOL So do not worry you are still eligible!
