I'm not sure if this is unique to the Firelight 12, or if the Firelight 600 shares the same design. I do know many of the castings from the 12 were re-used in the 600.

In any case, there's an adjustable plate / damper of sorts, across the top of the door. It seems to me it's designed to adjust the air wash across the door glass, but I'm not sure why the manufacturer made this adjustable, or how one would know if they have it opened (or closed) too far. It's held in with two bolts, one on either side above the door (stick your head in the stove front load doors and look up), and these bolt holes are slotted to allow adjustment if the bolts are loosened.

When I received this stove, those bolts were loose, and the damper was slid all the way forward/closed. Not knowing where to adjust this when I re-tightened the loose bolts last year, I figured a safe bet was to aim for the middle of the range.

My glass does get filthy, but I'm burning less than well-seasoned wood, and I'm forever burning on a very low setting. Perhaps an adjustment would help tailor the air wash to my burning style, but I really don't have a clue. I did try opening a bit farther last night, but haven't noticed any improvement in my glass (yet).

Any wisdom?

Give it a shot and see what happens. Open it up all the way and see what happens. Do it when you are home all day and do it on less than a full load in case anything acts up that creates some worry.

Let it be known that if someone chimes in with in-depth info about this and tells you not to mess with it, then ignore the above information and write it off as drunken ramblings.

...stick your head in the stove front load doors and look up...

disclaimer - cold stove only ;lol

sorry, couldn't resist....

I'm not sure on jotuls cat models...wish the oslo had one...but is that plate also used to adjust combustion air to the cat?

Nope... Just the air wash over the door. The cat takes its air supply upstream of this.
I was wondering this..? Because quite a few stoves have the air Wash as the Primary air?

The 30-NC's air was is the Primary air inlet.

I agree with BB's statement (Unless otherwise noted not too ;))

Yes, I think the air wash is the only source of air to the firebox on this stove as well. However, Stump Branch's question was about air to the cat, which is fed separately.

My Keystone has an adjustable air wash plate and they recommend a 1/4" gap between it and the glass. I've adjusted it a few times a couldn't tell if it made much difference and ended up leaving it a smidge more than 1/4".

Cool! I'm close to 1/4" now, although a completely different stove. Maybe I should call Woodstock to see what the pro's/con's are of open too far / too narrow? The Jotul dealers I've asked just give me blank stares.

Yes, I know this stare well.
