Apple Wood

Apple makes excellent firewood, and it does smell as good as it burns. Last year I burned about a face cord, and even though I was running my stove way too hot, I usually had coals in the morning. I couldn't get the maple to go all night last year.
If I could only have one type of firewood it would be Apple.

Apple is a very good firewood. I have burnt it many times.

I live in the apple capital of the USA, and I can not get any of it ( free) I could buy it for $250 - $300 a cord , but that aint gonna happen. I would take all I could get if it were given to me. I have not had the pleasure to burn it yet ( as I am new to wood burning) but I have read it is about the best wood out there

I save our apple for when it is below zero. it is great stuff..I find it takes a little longer to season...great stuff.

Yup, apple is really nice.

Can be a bit hard to split sometimes, but not awful. I get some from time to time and it's one of my favorites to burn.

I say save the apple wood for cooking! Ribs slow cooked with apple wood is just delightful. My .02

Yum! Now you're talkin'! Over here we call that smoker wood. It will burn fine, but the OP would probably be way better off to split that stuff into small sticks, put a handfull in a bag and sell it for $5.99 each at the local quickie mart. Then use the revenue to buy some firewood and a nice big screen TV or other fun toys.

Apple and bradley pear are some of the densest woods around, denser than any other regular woods. I've got some of the pear and it burns very long indeed.

cut do0wn a pear tree in my dad's backyard. made some tool handles and a malet out of the limbs. have the trunks in my shop still, slowly drying for some projects next year. Really dense stuff.

Glad to hear that about pear trees. I was assuming they were a lot like apple, but didn't know positively. In lists of BTUs/cord and so on they always list apple, and never list pear. We live on 5 acres that is mostly covered by an almost 50 year old orchard, mostly pear with many apple trees, the odd cherry or quince here or there. The pears seem to hold up a little better than the apples, but obviously at this age many of them are dying or falling apart and calling out to be firewood. We have only just started working on our own trees, was sidetracked by gardening season and recurring offers of free wood nearby from trees already cut down. Beginners luck maybe. But a lot of people must find their own wood around here, I see very few people selling wood except the bundles for idiots at gas stations. Hubby was saying tonight that we need to find a gas station where we can sell bundles of 5 splits for $4. If we just got half the money, wow! Then I really would go into lumberjacking (is that a word?)
