Not for sale

Last fall my mailman happened by when I was unloading a load of scrounged locust, and asked whether I was selling wood. The weather was cool, and I guess the thought of a fire in the fireplace appealed to him. When I said it would be a year or so before the wood was dry enough to burn, he replied "Aww, never mind. I'll just get it at the [grocery store chain]."

This Christmas I think my mailman may find a thirty-pound tip waiting for him.

Heck, if a camper knocked on my door I'd sell them some at campground store prices. $20 bill for a couple armloads...they haul. Done and done.

The local "grocery" has small bundles for $3.99. I stopped and roughly calculated that a 1/3 cord would be at least $120.
Mix of a couple kinds of pine and maybe oak.
I think I'll just get all my firewood from the grocer now.

I have had a few people stop and ask me if I was selling firewood while mowing my yard. No, I reply, that's for heating my house. They look at me like I'm crazy and don't realize you need to get ahead and let it season.

Straight to the Toy Fund.

If you're getting that kind of action, keep a supply of stuff you don't want to burn (willow, cottonwood, etc.) and change your sign.

I live in a recreational area and there are a lot of folks right along the highway selling all kinds of stuff from their homes to tourists. Campfire wood seems to sell well by the bundles. I'd be tempted to do it.

Who says you have to sell them the good stuff? Chunks and uglies.

The gas station sells 8 cubic foot for $24.99 and they sell a LOT of it.

Thankfully, we don't get many folks going by. One of the advantages of living well out in the country and on a dead end road too.

I love being on a dead end road.

There used to be a county campground near here but the closed it several years ago. If it was still open I would be selling 'premium firewood' in small lots for a good amount of cash-o-la.

Only people that stop by here are people trying to sell stuff. One couple was selling frozen beef and fish. Another guy stopped by to see if I wanted to buy a generator, and they would toss in a pressure washer and some other stuff for free. No thanks.

No one stops by here very often except the occasional Jehovah's witness - no one has ever asked about buying wood as my stacks are not visible from the road. When we go camping I take some of my punky wood or soft pine, sold a few armloads for $20 once. Would never sell my good oak though.

Well, if you sold 2 cu ft bundles for $10, that would be $640 per cord. I can buy fully processed split, seasoned and delivered Doug fir here for $175 a cord. That is $465 a cord profit and no CSS time. I guess bundling would take some time... but as Dave suggests, put out a money box and a sign and its self serve.

quads used to do that all the time. Too bad he is no longer on the forum.
