Hi all, I just purchased and installed a new Summers Heat (englander) pellet stove. I've been testing it out which has been great since it just started to get chilly here in North Western NJ at night. Definitely one of the best investments I've made.

My question has to do with burn rate. It's only mid September which puts the morning temps at around the upper 30 - lower 40 degree range in my part of NJ, still pretty early to be burning lots of pellets. It still gets somewhat warm outside in the middle of the day (60 - 70).

I've been reading that I should get anywhere from 16-24 hrs from a 40 lb bag of pellets. Right now it's running on 1 - 1 settings and I've heard about some people adjusting those bottom three buttons but I also read in the manual that this should never be done (well, we all know about that).

I really want the place warm, but feel that at the settings 1- 1 I should be getting much longer out of a bag of pellets. it seems I'm only getting the minimum of about 16 hrs. I understand there's many variables including what type of pellets I'm using, but at the lowest setting I'd think I should be getting much much longer out of a bag either way. Is there something that needs to be adjusted on those bottom three buttons?

Keep in mind it's a brand new stove factory settings and all that.

Any advice for a newbie ? Thanks

16 to 24 hours seems kinda long even on 1 but I havent fired up mine since last March.

I seem to get longer than that out of mine on 1 (I run mine on a T-Stat and even then, in the middle of winter, I get at least 24 Hours). Then again, I did play with 2 of the bottom 3 buttons. I'd have to look to see what they are.

I didn't think the 25 PDVC (if that is your stove aka 55-SHP10 , & 55-TRP1) would run a thermostat. Maybe the new ones will.

If Eric's is heating less space in a well insulated area with a 'stat it could last longer. Mine was an on or off situation. I could turn it up and down but had to manually do that.

The newer (2004-present) ones will run off a stat, but only in Hi-Lo mode. The feed rate will lower to 1 when stat is satisfied on temp, but blower stays the same, AFAIR.

First we need to know what the bottom 3 are set at. It's possible their wrong.

General length of the pellets you're using has some effect too....predominatly long pellets will last longer but give less heat, and vice-versa to short pellets.

Also need to check the abcd mode or whatever the modes are. If you are getting 16 hours though, you are doing pretty good. I get 12 or less.

i can help, PM me a phone number (daytime) and i'll give you a jingle to talk about how to dial her in

i see you just joined welcome! as for PM (private message) so you do not have to post a phone number in the forum look over at my avatar pic, and click on my screen name , it will bring up a small field , select 'start a conversation" and you can then send me that number without having to post it out in the forum.

i work for the company which built your stove in the customer service department, i can help you dial the unit in to a better burn rate.

really? we need to talk bro, you should do better than that

Sure lets talk..
Ok, ok, I think half of that reason is because my house sits on top of a very cold, drafty, crawl space and basement which cold air comes up through my 113 year old floor.
So I really have to keep the stove a blaring. But I dont know, could be guess here.

ohh ok, i thought you were runnig on low (like 1-1) in which case you should do much better than 12 hours a bag, but if you are running at higher ranges its different

The first thing I would do is insulate that space....

My PDVC will easily do 18 hrs on a 40# bag, and my bottom 3 are usually 4-5-1 (unless it's really cold)
