Today I will be going to look at a used Jotul 550. The current owner says the insert was installed in their recently deceased neighbor's house, which they have purchased. The deceased man was very ill, and the insert was installed by the deceased man's family, for him to enjoy when he returned from the hospital. Current owner says it was only used once before the man passed away. It certainly looks gently used in the pictures. They are selling it because they plan to rent the house, and do not want renters to burn the place down. Do you all have suggestions on what questions I should ask and what specific things should I inspect?

Thank you

First thing is remove the grate and please do not burn presto logs in it. The grate must have been put in by the family. It is not a factory recommend option. After that look at the baffle and make sure it looks good. But judging from those pics I don't think there were too many fires in it so Ll should be fine.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? I will be going to look at this thing in about 7 hours. I am very excited to see this thing.

No suggestions other than the 2 mentioned above, but I wanted to echo that this is a GREAT stove! I bought mine 4 years ago and have not regretted one minute of it's use. Read the threads posted here on how to get the longest and hottest burns by adjusting the flue, and enjoy! Hope you got a good price!

Looks brand new from the pics. Obviously check for small cracks, warping, and examine the baffle, but it looks like you got a great stove on your hands. Will be even better if the price is right.:)

Thanks guys. They are asking $2,300. The dealer wanted $3,100.

Does that price include a ss flex liner and all the fittings? If so, it makes the price sound pretty good. I might offer them $2000 and see what they say. Most people price things higher than they expect to get and if you can save another few hundred dollars it's worth a shot. You can always pay full price if they turn you down and you think their asking price is fair.

I think that price is just for the insert. I was planning to offer them $2,000 and check on the liner too. I need about 20' and I suspect this is installed in a ranch that isn't likely to have that long of a chimney. I'll post an update later.
