I had a Craigslist seller tell me he had some hickory that had been split for 1 year + he would sell for $50 for a half cord. Here is my moisture meter results. Do you think I need a new meter? I sent the guy home with his wood in hand.

You're right he was probably telling you a tale. From what I hear it doesn't make much difference but I think you're supposed to take the reading with the grain. Wouldn't have been any good to you this year and maybe not next but $50 for a true 1/2 cord is a good price even if it has to sit.

Yeah at that price I would have it stacked and waiting its turn in a year or two.

All he could haul.

Yeah, why would you turn down a $50. 1/2 cord of precious hickory? Even if it is green, it's delivered. You probably could have got it for $35/$40 after you embarrassed him with your moisture meter.

For the same reason given by Bspring; I would have sent him out fast. I don't care if it was a deal, the seller did not tell the truth.

I tend to agree with bspring and backwoods. Complain about sellers selling wet wood all you want, but the reason they continue to do so is evident in the above posts, it'll sell!

I'm not trying to be a jerk here.

One of my favorite topics among networking conversations is that most people hate the thought of owning rental property and dealing with tenants. I buy rental property and deal with tenants.

If I can buy a TRUE half cord of solid hickory for less than $50. (I'm going to make you pay a little for being a lying little...), then I'm buying it!

I'll sit on that for a year and sell it for a $150. and never touch it.

I don't disagree w/ bspring and backwoods. If you're an honest person you expect to be dealt w/ honestly. There should be more people like that. But it's like buying anything, used cars, a house; usually (or at least you have to assume) the seller will try to make his product sound better than it is. scjotul kicked the tires and called the guy on it.

Seems like half the firewood sellers don't know seasoned from non-seasoned and even if they do, who's gonna sit on cord upon cord of well stacked firewood for 2 yrs+ to sell it at $150/cord, ain't happenin'.

If you can use the wood you and the price is right I say buy it. When you realize how much time went into cutting and splitting that 1/2 cord for $50 it's a bargain.

Honesty and integrity is certainly important and sure u won't rely on that guy in the future but the current offer is great.

On the matter of the meter, I have the exact same one, I've never been able to get any significant difference between with the grain or without, certainly not 15-20% difference. It looks like you've kept it in good condition it's probably reading correctly, does it show ~30-35 in your palm?

It's probably wet, how did it sound? nice and high pitched or low thud? How heavy was it? I love my meter but I still find myself using the feel and sound more often than not.

I don't disagree either. I will take advantage of the situation. I'm not taking advantage of anyone when I sell it. A good, solid 1/2 cord of seasoned hickory will bring $150. here no problem.

Ahhh...Who am I kidding? I'd end up burning it for myself...

Just saying, though...

$300/cord is pretty pricey. Mostly cords go for between $120-180 around here but I have seen some high prices. I saw an add or two in nycraigs listing "city cords" in Manhattan. God only knows what that is or goes for.

Up here a semi truck load of ten logger cord Oak or Hickory is $850 delivered within 30 miles. Its alot of wood but i get my mixed hardwoods for free. Wood is abundant in NW Wisconsin. I just keep my eyes open and ask for fallen or cleared out wood Its -31 F outside chilly!

Was it really hickory?
Hickory is harder to get at that price but if you know a logger (and half of the men here are loggers) you can get them to sell you a truck load at that price and it is genuine. But you have to wait until they get into some of it. its patchy. Maple is the most plentiful wood here.

Yes it was hickory maybe not quite a full half cord but close. This is my first year burning I wish I had known about this site 3 years ago. I have some oak cut last year split a couple of months ago. So I need something dryer than I have now to burn. I did have some oak cut 4 years ago but it is running low. I plan to get 3 years ahead but I can't do it overnight. I may try and get some pine that would be ready for next year. I am still searching for some seasoned wood this year.
