Free elm?

Free is usually a good price and Elm would be a real treat for me. We usually only get Fir, Pine or Tamarack. Plus I need the exercise.
 
I am burning some elm that's been stacked for 3 years. I wish I had more. Hydraulics definitely preferred.

Elm can be great for firewood but I would not cut and then split a green tree. We wait until the tree is dead and most of the bark has fallen off. This way it usually is not stringy and splits much easier. Not stringy means it will burn much better because that stringy stuff goes up like kindling wood.

If only we all were able to have such options.

That said, since the original poster didn't seem willing to split it for what it is, with what he has to work with, then I'd suggest a pass on it.

I guess it depends on how badly one needs / wants the wood.
