One step closer to insert installation ...

I think I'm going to have the person who cleaned the chimney install the insert when it comes time. He's NFI certified and sounds knowledgeable. He said he puts a block off plate at the top of the chimney. Does that sound right? He would use stainless steel piping and also said he insulates at top of chimney and bottom but not in between. I will buy Roxul and ask him to put it in if he doesn't normally do it. I saw somewhere else that the Roxul is 3.5" which might be an issue on sides with not enough room. Should back, sides, bottom, top of insert be insulated with this Roxul? Is there something else to use if it is in fact 3.5"? Thanks again to all of you with all this great info.

we use foil faced ceramic wool around the insert we have never used roxul but we will have to try some since every one here seems to love it.. and I would tell him to insulate the whole thing and install a block off plate et the bottom as well. if he wont do it find someone else because that is how it should be done.

Thanks bholler, I will. I have one more question about the insulation of the pipe. I still have to measure present chimney liner, but do you know approximately how much extra space an insulated pipe would take over the 6" pipe?

you need about 7.5" to put in a 6" pipe wrapped in 1/2" insulation. if your existing flue is 11 by 11 no problem if it is 7 by 11 that will be a problem and you will probably need to break out e existing liners.

you got a bunch of half answers here...lets put them together into 1 answer.

1) block off on top of chimney isn't a block off! its a chimney cap!
2) a block off plat is at the top of the fireplace. Its purpose is to keep heat from rising into your chimney. The block off p[late will make you heating more efficient by keeping more btu's in the living space.
3) ruxol is used on top of the block off plate. I have never used it to insulate the whole liner because I don't think it would stay on it too good, nor do i think it would fit into a chimney very easily. You can stuff the ruxol in/up from the fireplace before the block off plate is installed and you can also stuff some down from the top before the cap is installed.
4) liner insulation is commonly ceramic insulation with a foil backing on one side, the insulation is held to the liner with spray glue, foil tape, a fancy wire mesh and hose clamps. much more sophisticated than ruxol....spend the money for the insulation kit and you wont regret it.
