Well I called the dealer who installed it and told them I wanted a block plate. They stated again I didn't need one and I told the sales rep it will be code in CT as of next year and the Jotul book specifically says one should be installed. He said he was going to check with his installer and look it up in the Jotul book and get back to me. What are your guys thoughts on this? They seem reluctant. Not sure why? Is it that much work?

The plate is really simple to make and no one will see it so it doesn't have to be pretty. Did you look at the links? Just make one out of carboard that fits pretty well in there. Then cut a piece of sheet metal to match it.

I get the impression that for many installers putting in a plate is the exception rather than the rule. As for it being much work, it's a little confusing why the reluctance, since there is no reason they should install one at no charge. It would seem an installer would charge a certain amount for stove and liner install, and add accordingly if a block-off is desired. If they can make money by doing the work, why refuse the work?

A little different than doctors and car dealers, who seem very good at finding work to do that people DON'T need or want.

Yeah I could easily make one, but I am very busy and I kind of feel like why should I? I paid money for the install, I just want it done right. They did get back to me and said they found it in the Jotul book and would calling me for a install date.

I don't understand why a professional dealer would not know to install a block plate
The same reason many install the cheapest possible liner and most do it without insulation. To keep the install price down so they sell more stoves.

So you are really busy? How could you have time to burn wood?

If you are really in need of a tractor, how could you have time to post on hearth.com?

If I were the installers I wouldn't install it for free as it's not a necessity. Did you tell them you wanted the block off plate when they gave you the estimate?

we do it with all installs in fireplaces but it is not the industry standared so it should not be expected so you need to ask and you should expect to pay more. We dont charge extra for it but we are also far from the cheapest guys around.

Hi Chanlon- Beauty of a stove and its my favorite enamel finish too. Good dry seasoned wood, keep her between 400-600 degrees stovetop temp and you'll be warm for years, good luck with her.

I asked three installers about the block-off plate and not a single one of them included it in their quote for install. Hence, I'm doing it myself!

It doesn't help to ask for an opinion of installing a block-off plate. Say you want one quoted for as an extra if you have an exterior wall fireplace.

Not sure what you are getting at? yeah I'm busy with my job, my kids and stacking and splitting wood. Just like many here.
Just giving you a hard time. By the way that stove looks really good in front of that fireplace. Whats the old saying? If you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Hey some things are best left to the professionals, when I was trying to drill my plate into the firebrick with a square drive it slipped and I drilled my finger fun times.
