By Jove, I think he's got it! That explains the scaly bark. The Swamp leaves are supposed to be slightly different, but I couldn't reach a live leaf. Acorns should be slightly different as well.swamp chestnut oak is very similar to chestnut oak. your leaves and bark pictures appear to be of the swamp variety.
Yep. I'm not sure exactly which one but the bark and leaves look like you've got something in that Red Oak group...I got another load today. I found a standing tree in the area with the same deep furrow bark. It's not white oak, but definitely an oak.
Hmmm, not sure what that is. I don't see medullary rays...granted, they are hard to see sometimes. Here's a pic of the "rays' but like I said, they aren't always this easy to see.And I also got some of this, would it be plain old white oak?
i agree with Woody, red oak type in top two pics. the mystery wood kinda looks like hickory or hard maple, if you have them in your area.
They are usually visible in the Oaks, but can be real hard to see in some cases. That pic was a small round that was lying around in the stack for a while, and rays were more visible than you usually see.never knew what the Rays looked like. Are they visible on fresh cut green wood? That pic looks to be pretty seasoned
Yeah, that heartwood was bugging me. I put Hickory with Maple in my reply at first, but then took it out because I wasn't sure about the bark. The only two Hickories I've seen here are Shagbark and Pignut, their bark is different than what Jay has there.red oak type in top two pics. the mystery wood kinda looks like hickory or hard maple, if you have them in your area.

Here is some Chestnut Oak I scrounged. Looks similar! Sorry if I added to the confusion thinking it was sassafras.
Took some more pics to add...

No question...the rays are visible and the split face sure looks Oak-y. The inner bark color is really looking like the first pics Jay posted, in the back of the truck. Here is some Chestnut Oak I scrounged. Looks similar!
Wow, that is some chunky bark!Took some more pics to add...
I've seen that with White Ash around here. Most are pretty uniform color throughout but once in a while I'll cut one that has darker heartwood. I'd think the soil would be similar on all of them, but maybe the roots were closer to bedrock on the dark ones....this soil is erosive.i wonder if soil types have an affect on heartwood coloring. that is definitely chestnut oak, and mine on my property have a much darker heartwood
You can see the sides of rays in the split pic. I think the ray structure is used to transport water. Now that I know what the rays are, I know what to look for.
