Can you burn anthracite coal in a wood stove? Like most of us here, I'm a bit of a pyro, so I need to know what makes coal burn. My attempts so far have been lame.

Coal burns with an air supply coming up from the bottom through the coal bed. Most wood stoves have air inlets in the front, so that's already no good for getting coal to burn. Coal also burns much hotter than wood, so you're risking damage to your stove with that kind of heat. Finally, coal releases corrosive gasses that will rust out your liner, catalyst, and / or secondary burn tubes when it burns. Coal stoves are built to stand up to this, but wood stoves aren't.

Don't burn coal in a wood stove.

They are called wood stoves for a reason.... :)

You also need shaker grates to rid the ash from the coal.
Bituminous coal would work if you mixed in, but as stated.. unless the stove is made for coal, not a good idea.
Also, bituminous burns dirty..

I guess I'll have to let it go. I have 3/4 bag of anthracite coal. I can put so much in my daughters stocking.

Hell, 3/4 of a bag of anthracite is fine. Sprinkle it in. Don't try to burn it by itself. That little amount not going to hurt anything. Save a little for the Christmas stocking though!

Without air under the bed you are wasting your time for the most part. I have burned many tons of coal and it needs under fire air to do anything useful.

Yea, what little I've tried just ends up as orangish rocks afterward, even when sprinkled in with wood/pellets.
