I started stacking like this thinking it would help to air dry the middle splits. Is this a waste of space and time or is this a method others have tried to their success?

Splits laid perpendicular to the other pieces.

I do it to level things up for a more stable stack.......not for drying purposes. Wood seems to dry just fine.......

Good if you need to dry fast. If you're 2+ years ahead, then it's unnecessary effort. So, it depends on your situation!

I stacked a few pallets with every row perpendicular to the previous, trying to promote the fastest drying, in my first year or two. Now I'm far enough ahead, I don't bother, and stacking moves faster.

I stack like that for stability. My stacks used to fall over constantly. I've been stacking like this for a few years and I can walk on them. Not sure what effect it has on seasoning.

You would think if the sun and air can get to it drying time should not be affected. I also will do this to level up my stacks. Drying time doesn't seem to change.

In my experience, stacking like this helped drying time significantly.

Can I save this picture, and repost it in other threads later giving credit to @Omaha419 please?

Every two months or so we have a stacking thread go by where I say "stacked all criss cross like a Pilgrim" and this is exactly what I mean.

In my experience wood stacked like this will dry faster, but it takes me FOREVER to stack like this, so I don't do it anymore.

@Felix5513 , I think you will get slightly better airflow that way. If you have good sun and good wind on your stacks it might not be needed, but if you aren't as far ahead as you want to be it probably will speed things along a bit.

I took this one from Google images. My pile is covered in snow. No need for credit!

I cut this around about cord of ash last October, I need it dry by October of this year so I did the criss cross / log cabin stacking - more air flow and sunlight for sure this way, I'm sure it'll be ready. Thankfully my oak and hickory will be ready for 2017, 18, & 19. These first 2 years have been tough to get and or find wood below 20%.

If I could get a pallet out of my barn and straight into the boiler room's log store that would definitely save a huge amount of double-handling ...

There is a log company in the UK which sells logs on pallets rather similar to @JP11 They do a 1-cubic-metre pallet, but this photo is their 2cu.M. version

You look like the local Walmart for wood. Great system.

LOL.. that's only a shot of one half of the barn.. other half is completely full. There's a farm shutoff for water in that pic that hogs a spot, and the chipper lives inside for when I finally get around to overhauling the bearings. It still works, so I haven't come up with the motivation to do it. I have one row in the middle that's 8' shelves. Thats' lawnmower, driveway groomer, and then a little workbench. It's nice to get the off season stuff up 12 or 14 feet in the air and the heck out of my way! but the only way to get the golf cart down is to borrow my buddies forklift. My tractor can reach middle row only.

Looks like a wood tossed salad! but if it works...it works.
