The stove has been out for a few days so Wednesday I decided to light the stove again. The bypass was closed I opened the door and put some newspaper and kindling. Before I was about to light the stove I opened the bypass and something didn't feel right. Next thing I know a bird is flying out of the door. It scared the crap out of me and my 4 year old. The cat chassed it around the house for a few min then it flew out the door.

Most likely a starling. They are looking for a nesting spot at this time of year.

Seems a lotta birds here are looking now...wrens, bluebirds, what have you. If it's relatively dark in the room, they will usually fly to the light when I have the door open. They don't get in the stove, though; My cap is screened.

Have had bluebirds in our stove several times.

We are getting daily wakeups now with local flickers using the chimney cap as a sounding board for their machine gun like hammers to attract mates.

I get my all day long woodpecker knocks on a tree next to house. Never went into chimney yet tho.........LOL

The sapsuckers use my neighbor's metal gate. Sounds of spring.

When I went to light the stove earlier this week. After having it out for a week and a half I found two dead birds in the stove. Back in February a squirrel managed to get down in the stove and chewed the hell out of my door gasket.

Our stove is down in the currently unfinished bacement so we aren't near the stove much. If this keeps up I. Going to have tomputsome screen or something to keep the critters out in the summer months.

I used to own a VC vigilant. I heard a tapping near the stove one day and as looked and looked, I noticed a starling inside the stove door, tapping on the glass with it's beak!
After opening the front door so it could leave, I checked the stove and, found 10 more dead in the back! I cleaned out the flue gas circulation passages and found four more which had been baked.
I clean my flue from the basement with a poly brush and fiberglass rods. At the end of the heating season I clean the flue thoroughly and then, shove the brush back to the top and leave it til fall. Keeps the birds out and the brush will not rust apart like a steel bristle, can.
