opened up my Blaze King PEJ and the square metal radiant shield was sitting right on top of the 7 inch circular cat. The best diagram I could find showed it attached to the top of the stove somehow. Plate shows no signs of broken weld so my question is how is this attached to the top of the stove. I cant imagine a cat works with a plate resting right on top of it. Are there any remedies if it is supposed to be attached to the top underside of the stove?

The plate you are referencing was welded to two tabs suspended from the bottom of the stove top. There was also a insulating blanket (small) between the plate and the bottom of the stove top.
Using a mirror, visually check to see if the two metal tabs are still there and if so, use a 110v portable welder to reattach. Your stove is probably 20-30 years old and after that long it appears the two small welds have been broken. If the two tabs are gone, you may need to fabricate two small posts and reattach the plate.

Does this shield do anything beside insulate the catalytic probe thermometer? If i were to skip the weld, add a new catalytic combustor is this stove going to function better than it already has at heating my small home? I assume my 10 percent crumbled/melted combustor hasnt been doing much for me for the 5 years I have been in the house. At any rate it seems to heat the home just fine living in a coastal climate. Any thoughts would be appreciated and if its worth hauling the stove out the door to a friends shop to weld the plate up. I dont detect any posts within the unit but could easily bridge the less than a 1/4 inch gap with a weld. Is not going to be easy getting this thing out of the house. No access to a portable welder unfortunately unless I pay so big bucks in this town.

We have no history of operating the unit without the shield (in the real world). We do have records showing excessively hot stove top temps without the shield and insulating blanket. The best coarse is to repair the stove or replace it.
