Ok, it took me half a day to figure out how to post these pics :)

I measured this pile, the logs are 20 footers, the pile is a good 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide, I'm figuring 800 cubic feet, which would be about 6 cord.

Very nice. You have a lot of work ahead of you. Enjoy! Actually, after reading your post again I see you are from Gettysburg. I live in Dillsburg. Any chance you can hook a brother up and give me info on how to get wood like that?
 
Lotta work to get it bucked, split and stacked in time for it to season!

Reminds me, I have to get to work as soon as the mud clears!

ah, this stuff is green for sure, it's for 2 years out, '09/'10, I got next years stuff split and ready to go.

talk about mud, I made sure the driver kept it on the stones there ya see, we'd a had a mess otherwise.
 
Nice! Looks like you got a good deal. I'ts a good idea to get a year or two ahead on your wood supply. Have fun.

strange ain't it?

Unusual weather here in south Pennsylvania this winter, very little snow, only a couple inches total.

We looked at some old pics the other night, as I was raised right here where the above pics are taken, and the snow was piled up 6 feet and more in drifts, but that was back in 1967 or so.

We've had 4.4 inches of rain in the last week or so though, ground is mighty soft, kept the log truck on the stone drive there ya see :)
 
Alright, a little buckin' and a bit of splittin' and this is what $320 got me :)

The 3 rows of stuff that's not covered up, all red oak.

A little over 4.5 cord

Looks nice! I should have my splitting done in a week or so- Then the stacking begins....Looks to be around 6 -8 cord. too hard to tell right now....

That's some excellent firewood! Red oak burns hot and long... Gonna try stacking mine on the ends like you did, looks pretty stable..

The oak is cut 21 to 22 inches. The pile is 4 feet high. The "free" pallets, are 40 inches by 75 inches, and they are the nicest pallets I ever saw. I got 8 of 'em lined up under that pile of oak. So, 40inches times 8 equals 320 inches....divide by 12 and ya get 26.67 feet. Multiply that by 5.5 feet, which is the width of three rows of 22 inch splits, and then by the 4 feet high.

So, 26.67 long x 5.5 wide x 4 high = 586.74 cu. ft., then divide by 128 cu. ft. to get the cords which is a bit over 4.5 cords.

Also, I stuck a couple 75 inch 2x4's in that stack, about halfway up, running straight through the three stacks from front to back, and stacked splits right on top of 'em, and that tied the whole thing together real nice.

here's a pic from the other end, I screwed a 2x4 on this end to help stable things up a bit, then got the idea to stuff a couple 2x4's right into the stack.

The other pile on the left there is some ash in the front, apple in the back, it wraps around and includes probably another 4 cord or so of various stuff, walnut, hickory, locust, cherry, sycamore........

oh, there's a little holz hausen right next to that stack of unused pallets there too, and not in the pic is another stack of 1 cord of ash and 1 cord of boxelder.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and information. Looks like you have things well under control.
You must have a large stove to handle 22 inch pieces.

I have about half my wood in now, mostly dead elm so it will finish drying easily by fall.
I am going to order a tri axle load for the following year to cut up this spring and summer.
Good way to your firewood.

Hey Carl, that Jotul Oslo takes a 22 inch split, in fact, you can get a 24 incher in there if you have to, and a bit longer than that even if you go across corners.

My wife and I have about 4.5 acres, the home in that last pic is ours. If you look at the pic with the barn and shed, a bit left of center is a white farm house, that's my dad's place where I was born and raised, he's got about 5.5 acres.

I love the place, wouldn't change anything for sure! .......... uh, except to build a HUGE woodshed, haha.
