Got the stove today hardest part was getting 400 pounds of it out of the truck but I am wondering what I loose by only running the pipe up to the first flue tile in my fireplace. I have a 6" pipe collar on the stove and 16' of 9x12 good clay liner also have a separate flue for the furnace/water heater in the same chimney. Both the fireplace and the furnace/water heater with the smaller flue draft well almost too well at times. Whats the downside to just running the pipe up to the tile?
New insert arrived now to line all the way or just to the first tile?

You'll lose some draft without the full liner. If that isn't an issue, there are others. A blockoff plate is a must-have if you're only running the stove pipe to the tile. You may have to do some custom fabrication to make it fit properly. Cleaning the chimney will be more difficult. You'll have to remove the insert to make sure you get all the crap out of the chimney. With a full liner, all of the mess will just fall directly into the stove.

400 lbs is a pita to pull out every time you clean the chimney. FYI a full liner is code in Canada and I suspect it only a matter of time till it becomes code in the US for inserts.

US code would require a liner to the top of this chimney as well. At 9" x 12", this flue has a cross-sectional area (CSA) of 108 sq.in., which is more than 3x the 28 sq.in. CSA of the 6" flue collar on the insert. NFPA 211 requires that this oversize chimney be lined with 6" round stainless liner all the way to the top.
chimney is through the house 2 flues 1 for the fireplace which is located on first floor and 16' to the top of chimney from the first floor. as things are with the furnace and fireplace I get alot of draft.The insert is a buckstove tharrington 2100I with a 6" flue. what else do you need to know ? Glady answer what I can. Also the cleaning thing with a full liner where does the crap fall? the stove has a ceramic fiber between the flue collar and the firebox itself how would I get the creosote out once I sweep the chimney either way?
I regret most things i do in this house so........ Maybe get the liner, will 304 stainless rigid liner pipe do it? I will have to see how to remove the fiber since I am going to be the sweeper.
a 6" stove pipe will just fit up through my damper as long as it is 6"no more. The reason I ask is I found 16 feet of rigid 304 for $140 to my door would like to use it if itwill work. Is 304 stainless ok?

Ebay, but damned if I can find the link now! yesterday they had 24pieces of 6x24 stainless sections for $1150 each and $40 shipping to me for 8 pieces. Now I just gotta find it again.

Mtaccone, be careful! That sounds like the stuff I got last year. The trouble with it is that it is NOT 6" but closer to 5 3/4" It will not fit standard 6" pipe and the stuff even had trouble fitting into itself. The joints were real loose. If I remember correct it came out of New York. I ended up tossing it out and went with new class A pipe all the way up.
