Feeling the Heat
Hearth Supporter
Just wanted to drop a line and introduce myself as I've been lurking for quite sometime and finally purchased our first insert - Quadrafire 4100i. My wife and I really enjoy using our fireplace however it just sucked the heat out of our house. I've grown up with a wood stove and pellet stove at my parents house, so I'm really looking foward to heating with wood again.

I'm hoping they can fit my install within the next 2-3 weeks. I'll be sure to post some photo's once its installed - I can't wait!!!

Oh, and I think I'll be receiving a gift certificate for a Stihl chainsaw from Quadrafire - I just bought my Echo CS 400 (pretty happy with it) but with the gift certificate a MS 361 might be coming home soon...

Congratulations and welcome! That baby should do some serious heating this winter. Hope you have lots of nice and dry wood already for it.

Thank you!

I only have about 2 full cords that are seasoned (over a year old). I know it will not be enough, but it will get us through some of the really cold weeks/months. I'm already cutting wood for next year as we would like to use this as our primary heat source.

My project this weekend is to gather up the extra pallets from work and build my new wood stacking area.

Congrats. You bought a good stove. It is going to be hard for you to keep from burning up that wood enjoying it early. Just fire is enough to keep the chill off till January. And then love every minute of the heat from then until the stack runs out.

Congrats!
I don't want to rain on your parade, but I doubt the gift certificate is going to be enough to purchase a new MS361
They go for list just over $600.00 at the local Stihl dealer here. I bought a used reconditioned one for about 1/2 that price.
I hope I'm wrong, congrats again, enjoy.

Or the furniture ... :wow:

Nope, not raining on my parade - I guess I should have been more clear. The Echo CS 400 would go back to Home Depot (only used it once for some small stuff) then use the $200 certificate - its close enough. Prices around here for the MS361 w/ 18" bar is about $575. After reading reviews about the MS361, it sounds like I can save the world with it! :)

In the meantime I'll use my father's collection of Stihl's until I can get mine (he was not happy to hear his son bought chainsaw and it was not a Stihl... ;) )

Good luck with the insert, Quad makes great stoves. And getting it installed just in time for fire season is another plus.

MOFOG23 sounds like we are in the same boat. I have a QF 5100i on the way, and plan on staying in the Stihl family. My father bought a Stihl the year before I was born, and its still going strong. Now that I look at it, his saw is pretty close to the MS361 (29 years old though). I was looking at the MS390 with is the same HP but because of a higher engine size and also weighs .7 pounds more.

My wood isnt going to be optimal this year, but what you might want to look into this as I am too, Bare Foot Pellet company makes compressed all wood bricks called "Envi" and "Envi 8" they have a plant in Troy PA which may only be a 100 miles or so from you. BTU wise a pallet thats 4'X4"x3" has the same BTU as a cord of wood 4x4x8, or 3 face cords of 16" logs. From what I see that works out to about $80-85 face cord, and its rated at 6% moisture.

If you want more info PM me.

Welcome and congrats on the new insert. I had my first insert installed last summer and my wife thought that she would miss the ambiance of an open fire. Now we find that the clanging of the stove heating-up, the way the wood burns and the awesome heat that we get, blows away any percieved ambiance that we lost.

Welcome aboard, your going to love the warmth this winter.

I am sure you are going to love your insert. We put ours in last fall and found that all winter we sat in chairs right across from it!! We never used to sit near the fire place before....now it's where we park ourselves all winter. We even had to get some more comfortable chairs in case we fall asleep!

Good news! I was at my parents marking some tree's for my future wood supply and my father showed me about 2 cords of wood that needs split. Its been sitting for 2-3 years and appears to be well seasoned! I know what I'll be doing next Saturday - I'm gonna be sore next Sunday! :)

Nice,
you'll love that 361, I love mine.
Its not the biggest beast in the list, but sure as hell does whatever I need it to do. And sure as hell ain't the smallest.

Well, not sure on the 361 yet. I used the echo this weekend and I have to say I'm rather impressed with it, especially for what I will be cutting on a regular basis. Is it the fastest saw out there? No. Is it built well? Yes. Does it start easily? Yes. Does it do what I need it to do comfortably? Yes.

I also compared it to one of my fathers Stihls, the 026.... pretty damn close for a non professional such as myself... something just won't let me give up the CS 400, especially after this weekend of heavy use.

I called my dealer and I'm still trying to get the details of the gift certificate, so if I do get it, I might just end up with another saw.... the addiction begins!

Welcome and congrats on the new insert.

Steve

oh, don't worry - there will be plenty!

Congrats on "setting the date" ;-) . You'll be falling asleep next to the stove in no time.

Which reminds me. I need to get an alarm clock for the stoves so I don't fall asleep while I am getting the stoves up to temp this winter. Twice I woke up with a stove well within the 'holy sh*t' category.
