Non catayltic baffle question

Hi,

I just upgraded to a new Drolet Escape 1800 and I'm getting it ready to install it. I noticed a steel slug (looks like the knock out for the stove pipe 6" dia x 1/4" thick) laying on top of the ceramic wool. I took out thinking they forgot to at the factory but I noticed it was mentioned in the owners manual and its referred to as "wool weight"??? Do all stoves using the burn tubes and baffles have this? The owners book doesn't say to leave it in or take it out?

Seems like its to heavy to leave in while burning on top of lightweight material but maybe the flames/heat want to push the wool & vermiculite board up out of position when burning? I don't know, its all new to me.

Anybody seen this or is it common?
 
I've never seen a round weight, but Regency puts rectangular
ones on top of the baffle blanket in their Hearth Heaters...
 
Not all non-cat stoves with baffles have that wool blanket. It's a big negative as far as I'm concerned and my stove never had one above the ceramic baffle board.

In this case, follow the directions. You don't want the wool to be sucked up into the chimney to clog it. The smoke would then pour into the room and it would be ugly.
 
Do a google on Drolet wood stove parts/escape. You should see a diagram of all parts.See page 42 of your manual.
 
I finally had a chance to call Drolet today and they said the same thing as was mentioned here-its a safety thing in case the draft was strong enough to lift the blanket up it wouldn't block the stove pipe connection.

I did see it shown in my manual but the manual is vague on many things so I wanted some input from the experts here. :)

I just installed the Drolet Escape 1400 wood burning insert, and it too had that round steel weight on top of the wool blanket that sits atop the baffle board.

I couldnt figure out at first why that was there either and I just left it there... im glad that I did.
