What is the wall covering? I know it's not, but it looks like wood paneling. If it's 2" you would need a clearance shield to prevent heat build up. Even then you are looking at a substantial distance

It is wood paneling. Something about the way you asked confirms my belief that I'm too close to this wall. I'm going to attach the image from the QF 5700 manual which specifies distances from the corners.

I think that a couple of things happened the first night:
1) I really had the thing running hot (up to about 650F on the chimney out about 3' above the top of the stove)
2) My stove is not really a corner install; it's angle puts it much closer to the right side. If it was positioned in as a corner, the side of the wall wouldn't have gotten as hot.

But, I'm thinking I need to put a heat shield behind the stove. I'm not thrilled about this (just want to be done) but it might be necessary?

I feel like I've got to get this right. Please advise.

I see what you are referencing. "E" states 2". Reading the other numbers the E column doesn't seam to jive. This is out of my league. I know that the clearances on mine are a lot greater for the caddy-corner measurement. Can anyone who inspects stoves chime in.

Just checked the manual. For my stove the caddy corner measurement is 24" with no heat sheild. With heat sheild it's 8". Call your local building permits office at the county and ask. It might take them a bit but they'll come up with the offset. Also you may want to call the manufacturer.

Hmmm . . . maybe I'm reading it wrong too, but it does seem like it says 2 inches . . . and for some reason that just seems really, really close in my own opinion. I mean I know the EPA stoves can have some pretty low clearances, but that seems pretty close . . . I definitely would check on this.
