temp gauge calibration?

i have 2 rutland gauges,seem to be 100 f apart. so i stuck em to a cookie sheet in the oven on 350 f.both were reading 100-150 f higher than oven after 10 min. so i manually adjusted them so they were closer to the 350 temp.anyone ever try this? or do i have too much time on my hands?
 
I don't think the oven temp jives with those thermometers, they are going to read the temp of your cookie sheet.
 
Possible. My wife was a pro baker and is fussy about oven temps. I have had to calibrate almost every oven temperature control we've had on ovens. A couple have been over 50 °F off.
 
get an IR thermometer and stick the gauges on your stovepipe and measure the stove pipe with the IR and set them to that.

I just tested my Rutland thermometer in my oven this weekend. I just put it on the rack and did it that way. It was dead on with my stove it was moving right with the digital temp on my stove. It may have been 2 seconds faster. I don't know how accurate that is either but I felt a little better about my thermo. I might go IR next year.
 
IR thermometer is far from reliable. Maybe +/- 50º on a good, flat black surface from what I have seen. Though it can be really off when you start looking at shiny, bare metal, or other surfaces with emissivity much different than .95

Best way to do it is throw out all thermometers but one. Confucius says "A man with two watches never knows what time it is"... same goes for thermometers! If you only have one, then you always know 'exactly' what the temp is. :)
 
when i want a reliable temp I use my good multi-meter with the temp probe
