Wood ID - 2 types I think?

They are each better than the other...depending on the situation. Oak is way better than pine for a long burn. Pine is hugely better than oak for a fast quick burst of heat. Bring them both home, perhaps 1 and 2 are elm but they aren't that big so you might not even have to split them (cause elm can be a PITA to split) and 3 and 4 are either ash or Norway maple, both nice heavier woods that are easy to split and great to burn. Wood burns; dry it well and put it in the stove. Use light wood when its' not so cold or to get qucik heat or to help a load of really hard stuff to burn, medium weight wood most any time, and heavy wood for those long burns. I believe a good wood pile has a mix of big and small and light, medium, and heavy. It's all good, just depends what your needs are at the time.
Top round in the first two pictures looks like Walnut to me...the rest Maple and maybe something else in there. Good score; typical Pennsylvania fuelwoods...

I think there are more than 2 types of wood here. In pics 1 and 2 I see a log of Black Walnut on top. Furrowed bark, thick white sapwood (fast growing tree?), and dark heartwood make me think Black Walnut. Picture 3 looks like Norway Maple to me. I can't really tell what is in picture 4, but apparentlt several types. In picture 1 and 2, under the Walnut, I see an older log that appears to be different than the walnut or maple. I think all of these woods are in about the same ballpark - medium density hardwoods. I'd take the mid diameter logs (8 to 12 inches) first, pick rounds the right length for my stove, and avoid knotty pieces, but not worry too much about what species of wood you pick up. I'd also take all of it is possible, but I am greedy when it comes to firewood.
Thanks everyone. I am heading back this afternoon before the snow to get another truck load. I would take it all but not allowed. I am lucky I am allowed two truckloads. There migth be more than 2 species in that pile? There were multiple trees taken down and I was like a kid in a candy shop grabbing anything that I could handle and get to my truck.

1 and 2 Hickory. 3 Poplar. 4 is a combo of both looks like to me. Take it all home. You'll need the Poplar while you wait for the Hickory to season. I'm burning both right now. All good.

Hickory? With these wide growth rings? I live beyond the northern bounds of hickory, but I've understoof it to be a pretty compact slow growing wood.

You might be right. I was going more by the bark, but with the zoom-in, the rings are pretty wide.

Bucks, take your maul and split that round in the top upper left picture that has the ivy on it, and if it is Walnut the inside will be brown in color, then post a picture of it split. That will end all of this speculation-I'd bet anything it's Black Walnut.
As soon as the snow is outta here, I will split the upper left. I also got some bad news. The remaining wood I was going to pick up is a no go. I was told it was sold. Oh well. I got some good wood free. Wish I did load the truck a little more. Keep you posted with pics for the end.
C'mon Bucks, whack that round in half and let us see a picture of it; I still say it's Walnut...

Yeah, it'll be awhile LOL...don't worry about it-we sure got hammered with this last one, eh? And they're watching another one for next Tuesday, but not saying how much it might be! I'd bet the farm that it was Walnut with the ivy growing on it-time (lots of time) will tell!

Way to go Bucks! You dug it out under all that snow! I still say it's Walnut because of that Brown "stripe" down the middle which will get wider as the tree grows; looks like a young tree or piece of one there.

Ok, the wood people were usure of, there is a pic showing what it looks like when split. Easiest wood I ever split.
Now, what the heck is the wood on the right of the pile. I tried split the pieces with my fiskars and then a maul. Couldn't get through it for the life of me. Everything kept bouncing back. It wasn't just one piece, they were all like that. I did get one smaller round split and it appeared very "wavy" on the inside. They all couldn't be knots, could they?
