I'm looking to extend my chimney about 3' and want it to look good, duh. Here's what I'm dealing with, about a 12' granite chimney.

I guess I would prefer not to add to the whole area of the chimney, maybe step it in. I've been looking for examples online but cannot really find anything comparable to what I have. I guess I'm just looking for ideas.

Some of my ideas are:

1. Get an extend a flue. Fastest solution but I don't think that a tall thin flue extender would look good at all.
2. Remove cap, step the chimney in (about a foot all around) by adding cement block and extending it three feet. The chimney is about 3'x6'. Cover block in the best granite block substitute I can find.

Any other ideas are welcome.

If it was mine I would just build it straight up and put on a cement crown that has a drip ledge. That way you do not have a angled surface for water to soak in at.

If you want it to look good, wait until you can afford to have a proper mason show up with his square, level and compasses and try to replicate it as closely as he can.

Was just going to suggest that. Which one did you get?

thats a big chimney for just one flue

You got that right.

After thinking about my options, I think I should just try to add an extension of some sort. I even think adding 3 more feet of granite to the top would throw off the house/chimney proportions. Also, I'm currently chiseling all the grout on the inside portion of the chimney and I can't re-mortar it until I get at least a new cap on there. There's a slight water intrusion.

Is there a way to add a section of class A pipe to the top plate? I'm not too familiar with class A, is there a special adapter that I need to get flex liner to couple to it?

bigealta- The chimney pot I bought isn't in any of the pictures, it is about 5' tall, shaped like a cannon. It should make quite a difference in the draft we get. :)

I think the extendaflue might look good......it is not too thin!

You could also use the wider one if you wanted that look - CC1818, but it is not as tall. In that case, you might want to build up a little base and put it on that.

(PS, I have extra special deals on closeouts!)

Not to steal the thread here but post a picture of that.

Hi -

I had a similar setup in brick. I needed 6' added. I ended up adding 4' of brick. Then I bolted a class 'A' adapter to the top plate, and added a 3' section of class A with a cap. Looks fine, draws very well.

I put the scaffold up, strapped it to the chimney, and put the bricks up there to keep the mason happy (since he's a good buddy). I poured the cap. not a bad project. Cost about $350 total.

all the best,
Mike

For better proportions maybe consider getting two extendaflues from Craig. I think the chimney would look proportionally better with two pots than just one sticking up out of it. But due to the centering of the flue, maybe not.

Seems like that mass of granite would be a real heat sucker in the wintertime. Is it a solid mass right through to the interior or is there a thermal break?

As far as I know, there's no break. So yeah it does suck up the heat. Two, maybe three extensions is probably a good idea, just not in the budget right now.

Anybody know about the class A to flex pipe adapter?

I guess a gradual step in to a point would be less masonry to lug up there. Kinda like a mayan pyramid on your chimney top... you could host some human sacrifice and wait for dec 21, 2012 to roll around.
