With all the good word that has been said about Somerset Pellets I've been calling around to see if anyone caries them within 50 miles of my place. Someone at Menards told me they would order them for me whenever I wanted them a ton at a time or whatever. I was excited because of the rave reviews everyone gives Somerset Pellets. They want to sell them at 224 a ton. And since they burn so hot and have so little ash, can it be too good to be true that I have access to these pellets?? Your thoughts ....

seems fishy.
ordering a ton at a time?
especially on a special request.
my 2 cents.

I agree with Smoke...seems strange that they will order a ton or two at a time. I think I'd get everything in writing from the MANAGER of the store, not a clerk, especially the price and delivery date.

Wasn't really concerned with Menards ordering practices, but rather Somerset Pellets. I've never burned them, but everyone likes them. Are they say better than Pro Pellet ??

I think a "Pro Pellet" is a decent pellet......but everything I have read/seen about a Somerset would indicate it a tad hotter and less ash than the Pro, so I think by most people's standards it would be a safe bet to call it a better pellet...but of course YMMV.......just my $.02

I agree 100% with BTU on this comparison.

Somersets pellets are made from there own milling scraps. So there fiber is controlled by there own and not bought on the open market. Seems to give them an edge. Nice stable fiber in gives you a better pellet going out! This is why the western softwoods are so good. Hard to beat any pellet made with a controlled fiber source(right BTU!).

Got to go with the boys on the always try before you buy. Every stove burns there own way. But if you can't try them first? Unless there was a moisture issue, You should have no issues. A member here named pelletdude sells them and I bet he hasn't had any returns!

Didn't you say you could get Marth's for $169/ton? You have to get(at least try) some of those!

Yeah I can still get the marths at 169. But i've heard so many good things about Somersets. And I am looking for a hot pellet. Since my quad will burn anything, I'm looking for heat.

You will get good heat from the Marth's and will get you through. Somersets will give you just a bit more heat and will be a bit cleaner.

If you can afford all Somersets I agree with max heat. But if you need to save a bit split the order and get both. Use the Marth's as shoulders(hate to call them that though!).

Just my 2 anyway.

Have you tried the softwoods? If you want more heat I would look for some douglas fir! They will burn you out!

Here in michigan the only softwoods i've seen was freedom fuel and they didn't get good reviews..

Yep, if all you can get are Freedom Fuel, stick with the hardwood pellets. I agree with Jay about the split order between Marth & Somerset. If it was me, I'd do 75% Somerset, and 25% Marth.

I don,t know where you are located in Northern Michigan the upper or lower but I just bought 4 tons of the uncle jeds (softwood)pellets for $220 a ton from greenways in Mt. pleasant Mi.coobie

Give me the low down on Uncle Jeds....

Burned Somersets (over one ton) and Pro Pellets last year (4 bags). Somersets In my opinion are the way to go. Even from other pellets that I have burned Somersets are my pellet of choice.

I started burning the uncle jeds last year low ash and good heat verses the pro-pellet I was burning.Do a quick search on the uncle jeds and I will think you will find folks are pleased with them.coobie

We sell and have sold a variety of pellets- Okies and Dragons for our Softwood and Turman, Somerset and Now Treecycle for our Hardwoods. IMO = The Somersets are one of the best Hardwoods we have sold and I have personally burned. You can't go wrong with a pellet that is made form a hardwood flooring company. The quality control at Somerset is unbelievable and the staff is excellent.

Another great pellet if you're close enough to the place mentioned....and the $220 price quoted above is good too.

Just picked up some pro pellets for 199. The rest of my tons are going to be the somersets and maybe a ton of those cheap marths..

Good idea getting a few different brands. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the Marth's, and maybe even wish you'd spent the ProPellet $$ on them instead.

But in any event, you'll have a nice selection of good pellets, IMO.

I hope for the same. If I could get them for that price, I'd grab as many tons as I could fit/afford in a NY second!
