“If a company calls to say they will be in the neighborhood and can clean your chimney for a low price, don’t be fooled. If a company tells you repair work is required, you should get at least one more opinion or estimate. This is about more than being ripped off financially — it’s about fire hazards and the safety of your family,” Mr. Burns said

Good advice. There should be a special place in hell for people that prey on the elderly.

There were a few in our area a couple years back, Flue Season or some other names were used. Same guy with different company names. Took the Oil Burner Pipe out of the chimney, and told my MIL that she needed to have the chimney relined. She gave him like $100.00 to clean before I showed up. I confronted one guy hanging out back doing nothing with a step ladder laying on the ground, and the other was sitting in basement doing a cross word puzzle. When I started to check the chimney they took off leaving the exhaust pipe out from the oil burner. Took a few other elderly folks in the neighborhood for cash before they were mentioned on the local cable news. I'm not sure if they were eventually caught, but I know the New York State Police were looking for them!

BG, I'm going to be in your area and I have something you need to buy

Hope it's not a tin-foil hat. I have a closet full of them  PM me with the details.

A friend of mine was cold called recently by one of these guys.

What's sad is that people like this make selling repairs to people who really do need them more difficult.

When I get one of those "we will be working in your neighborhood soon" calls I tell them to call me from the neighbor's house and I will bring a cup of coffee over and look at their work. Ends the call every time.
