Feeling the Heat

Assuming everything stays on track... finish grouting today, successfully move and set stove tomorrow... I'll be building my breakin fire tomorrow night. New stove is a Hearthstone Heritage. I have a mix of pine, red oak, and ash (mostly pine as this is Colorado) all c/s/s and well seasoned - it's all 9-18% according to my meter.

I'll post pics of the overhaul once I get everything finished.

Looking forward to soaking up the heat.

Good for you! perfect timing, I think Wed. is gonna get colder. I don't get to break in until the end of next week.

Sounds exciting. I have a fire going right now in the basement to take the chill out of the house. It is currently 49 rainy and windy here in Michigan.

John, you're gonna love the Heritage. We've got the Homestead (could not fit Heritage) and it's sweet. Good luck, and remember to only throw in one split and some kindlin' for the break-in!

Good luck with the new stove! We may be doing the break in fire for this season tonight. Been waiting for the temps to dip below 40 before I start burning; 39 tonight, close enough!

Yeah, it's definitely time. Overnight temps have been mid 30s to low 40s now for a couple of weeks. Supposed to be mid 20s next week. I drove my wife crazy last winter complaining about the crappy gas fireplace. It was actually a decent unit, but I grew up warming to a wood fire and it's one of those things that I just have to have. I'm in a different location now, but I spent 6 years at 9000 ft. There were just 2 seasons... wood cutting season and wood burning season.

And, there it is!

John, I like your install. How do you plan on doing the break-in fire or fires?

Thanks. I followed the manual for the first break-in. Used 10-12 pieces of kindling (for this I just use my maul and split a straight grained split piece into very small pieces) and one small split. I lit it with the primary air control fully open. When the stove was nice and warm to the touch I closed off the primary and let it die. This morning I repeated the procedure with a bit more fuel. No thermometer yet, so I don't know what my temps were. I had some problems getting enough air into the firebox. I'm creating a new post about that.

Love the hearth and install . . . hearth and stove compliment each other.
