So I recently was questioning about the weird way I have to close my Mansfield.... how I had to sorta lift the handle up then push it down for it to close. Well I went to the dealer a few weeks ago to check out their floor models and every Hearthstone stove had a latching mechanism different from the one I had... So I talked to the guy and got a replacement (under warranty) of the latch mechanism. I know there were a few people who said that they had a similar situation. Well I got the replacement latch today so I figured I would post the pics.

First pic, the semi-circle is the original latch that caused the situation. I do not know if this is the wrong latch, or what not.

Second pic , the rectangle one, is the replacement latch. Much easier to use just close, push down, and go.

Third pic is a side by side comparison of thickness. Replacement is much thicker.

Did Hearthstone change latches recently, I don't know, but the replacement that I received seems like a much better latch.

Is your latch like original or the replacement unit.

(edit) Ok the posting flips them so first is third and third is first...

My Mansfield originally had the semicircular latch. After 12 years of use the iron in the door frame wore away and the door wouldn't latch properly. I replaced the lever assembly with the newer one but had to grind a slot into the door frame as the newer latch sticks out farther than the original.

Door latch designs seem to be Hearthstones greatest weakness. There have been reports of many different models (Mansfields, Heritages, Equinox') having the iron on the loading door frames wear away from normal use. Ideally they would have a steel plate that the door latch rubs against rather than iron. I try to push the door in as I'm latching it to stave off further wear.

Just got done replacing the side door frame on my EQ( warranty covered the part, I installed it). The cast iron wore away and the latch had nothing to grab onto. I push the door in also as to keep down the friction. I got mine in January of 2009 so it didn't take long. I do almost all my loading using the side door.

Two years ago I replaced the handle on the side door. This year, I replaced the front door's entire frame(under warranty) because the front door would mysteriously open during operation. My dealer didn't say anything simply contacted Hearthstone for the free replacement. He states that the door handles have NOT changed over the previous few years but looking at the original one I got and the newer one, they are different. Have not had any further problems. At least my dealer is good to me. Shame that we all have had these problems. My stove was a lot of money and having doors open during operation was quite nerve wrecking to me and my family.

I don't have a side door, but my stove has the "new/replacement" style you pictured. Our stove was bought new in March of '09.

started having trouble latching door last spring on my 3 year old Homestead. guess I'm in good company.

It would seem they have handle/latch issues. I bought my stove this stove this past spring. Now it was a floor model/ unused at a nice fat discount so I jumped at it. The handle/latch mechanism that I got as a replacement is most definately thicker and seems much better than the original.

Was/is the problem with the latch, or the frame? and which style latch did/do you have?
