I see a lot of posts discussing the depth of install ( flush vs. sticking out 5 inches) of the hearthstone clydesdale. Most indicate it should be sticking out for purposes of the channeling of the heat vents. However, it seems that the newer clydesdales have incorporated into the surround mount channel extenders. This would seem to imply that the argument that the heat would be lost behind the surround is no longer valid.

Can anyone comment on this?? I'm having it installed today.
Thanks.

I don't have any specific knowledge of the Hearthstones. However, I have a somewhat similar insert (Regency I2400) & rely on the blower about 90% of the time for harvesting the heat of the fire. I would think that this would nullify any design tweaks that you speak of.

I believe another small benefit from having the insert stick out into the room the 5" is to increase the amount of surface area in the living space and hence increasing the radiant heating aspect of the stove. But really I can't imagine how much heat that 5" is going to provide.
