I really want to replace my old squire/buck smoke dragon insert in my fireplace. I want to take advantage of the credit but I cant afford to spend 3K on a new stove and a chimney liner before the end of the year.

What Company's should I be looking at? If its not possible to find a nice EPA insert with a window in that price range I would consider doing a stand alone unit half in half out of my fireplace opening. Is that advisable? The opening is I thing 26" wide and 30" tall. My hearth is not big enough to put it totally in front of the fire place.

If somebody could point me to some less expensive flexible liners I may be able to spend a little more on the stove. I have around 18 ft of chimney. All the kits I saw were around $600 but maybe I am looking at the wrong ones. I have a masonry interior wall chimney with really big tiles all the way up. I just want to put the liner in and block off top and bottom(which I can fabricate). My chimney is in great shape.

I think I want no cat-secondary burn style.

For example is this a bad idea... http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200325829_200325829

I wouldnt think you will find much of an insert for what you want to spend. If you can go free standing, I would look at those Englanders. Not fancy but functional. I think Uncle Bart has twelve of em. One in every room

You can always search the stove ratings section here at hearth.com and see what folks think of the various stove inserts you are considering.

Before we can give a recommendation, we need you to give us information.

I can tell you that I could've gotten my Lopi Republic 1750 with surround and blower, +18' of insulated liner, and installed it myself for under $2500. And that's a brand name insert capable of producing fairly significant heat.

The stove itself, with no surround, but with a blower would've been like $1700.

You might need to shop around for that price.

What are you going to try to heat? Free-standing stoves, instead of inserts, are often a few hundred dollars less as well. If you don't want to cover the opening, go with a free-standing.

stove ratings section, where is this? I just looked.

I am down with researching, I have already have at least 20 hours of reading old posts and looking at e-stores but I am here to learn from others experience, hind sight is always 20/20.

Ah a kindred spirit when it comes to research.

I was in the exact same spot as you this time last year looking at inserts on Northern Tool. I was looking at all the $800-900 inserts. In the end I hearth-mounted an Englander NC-13 in my fireplace/no blower. My house is a 1400sqft ranch. It does real good so far! Bought it for $800 in January and it went on sale the next day. I ended up getting it for $678. Got my insulated liner (15ft Chimney) for $500. I installed myself. Good luck!

I have a Drolet 1400i that I got from Northern Tool for ~$900.
EXCELLENT insert.
It easily heats my 2 story 1200 sq. ft. home.
The quality of the build is excellent. I have no regrets about buying
this insert and highly recommend it.
I installed it myself last fall and used it as the primary heat source
for my home last winter.

here is a good one and shipping is included in the price.

I have this insert and it works fine heating my single story ranch with a few small floor fans to move the air. No bells and whistles but it is made well and gets the job done. Only complaint is the insert is rather shallow and the exhaust hole is centrally located on the top of the unit. I wasn't able to install it like shown in the photos because there wasn't a way to get the liner attached with the insert sitting that far forward in the fireplace. Mine sits pretty much entirely inside the fireplace and I don't use the surround. I guess this unit was designed for shallow fireplaces...it would be nice if Englander designed a slightly larger model but again it does the job.

Hi there, we make the Drolet insert. I am obviously biased but you are getting great value for your money. It comes standard with the blower, is EPA certified, secondary burn technology and It's made here in North America and has a great warranty. You will need a faceplate kit to complete the installation. Check out the customer comments on the Northern Tool site (rated 4.7 stars out of 5). You can get more information here and download the manual ahead of time if you want. http://www.drolet.ca/product.aspx?CategoId=7&Id=428

Another one we make is available at Northern Tool is now on special for $759 and is rated 5 out of 5 by users (check out the customer reviews) with the face plate kit the total price is about $849!

If you have any questions regarding these units dont hesitate to shoot me a quick email.
